"CHANGE LIFESTYLE" on The Star frontpage hit me directly in the face
this morUrning at BF -- non-CON which I can't afford on a daily basis as it costs about twice our local food.

Most of us average Malaysians are already leading VERY BASIC lifestyles -- what is there to change?

Okay, let's see what the Deputy to Pak Lah has to say before Desi breaks into Rant and Rave, which has become quite many fellow Malaysians' typical lifestyle habit in the last two years. Before that, we also ranted and raved -- butt, not so loudly because the then PM Dr Mahathior Mohamad could even hear our whispers.

So let's dijest what the next-in-line PM has been dishing out as his vicedom of the day:

Adapt to higher fuel prices,
Najib tells Malaysians


PETALING JAYA: Malaysians should change their lifestyle and adapt to the inevitable fuel price increase, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

The Deputy Prime Minister said Malaysians should become more prudent in their spending and ensure there was no wastage.

“Such changes in lifestyle should be made so that even if there were increases in fuel prices, Malaysians will be able to continue having the good quality and comforts of life which they have been enjoying,” he said.

He said this during an interview on RTM1’s Isu Semasa Khas programme which was airedlive over RTM1, TV3, NTV7 as well as radio stations last night.

DESIDERATA:
Jest after reading the first three paragrapghs as reported by the largest circulating English newspaper, I almost vomitted the li'l mee goreng I had gobbled up with increasing rage.

The DPM impled that we have not been prudent enought in our spending.
Hey, the average Malaysians -- my ballpark figure of 'average" is a family of four living on take-home wages of RM2,000 a month -- had been mostly forced to taking on "two" jobs in recent times just to "survive"
"To ensure there was no wastage" -- what wastage are you talking about when there is NOTHING LEFT AT THE END OF EVERY MONTH?

"...even if there were increases in fuel prices, Malaysians will be able to contuinue having the good quality and comforts of life which they have been enjoying" -- is this statement true or even remotely reflective of reality for most Malaysians in general?

DESIDERRATA would publish the rest of the news report later, but let me get some points of my chest, well nigh to exploding. I paid for the non-CON BF and left it half-eaten. Yeah, how imprudent to waste RM2.50 in such hard times, Desi, I hear a Voice reprimanding ... or isit COMMANDING?
I'm running scared. Big Brother is watching!

The Government says the estimated savigs of RM4.4billion in fuel subsidy will go towards improving the public transport system (said by Pak Lah, reiterated like in dumb cow fashion by all his subordinates without any braingwork in examing the issue in any depth...or explaining to the Rakyat the RATIONALE of its programmes...

You spread that RM4.4billion over 13 states and what do you get?
Advanced mathematics using the calculator shows up: RM350million for one state. You build a few more ring roads and upgrade some roundabouts to bypass and flyover roads and beautification projects along the city highways, what's there to see?
Compound this with that 50% runaway gravy trains in negotiated tenders or worst of all -- NO TENDERS at all, but invites to certain CRONIES to enjoy the ride before the transport system even gets upgrade... Improvement of the transport network, MY FOOT!

How would that solve the TRANSPORT NIGHTMARE in most big towns and cities?

My advice to the PM: There is really no need to raise fuel prioces at all because
MALAYSIA is a NETT EXPORTER of petroleum, of a higher grade some more!
If I can get hold of my long background explanation on this old issue -- like an olde record of Elvis era being played here on a gramaphone ...I'll reprise it later, OK ... bear with me.

Let's go back to Najib's speech:

Najib, who chairs the Cabinet committee on the impact of fuel prices, said if such changes were not made, Malaysia could end up being a net importer of petroleum by as soon as 2010 and this would further burden the country.

Currently, Malaysia, despite having oil, was only a very small net exporter of the product, he said.

DESIDERATA:
I have noted that the Government now admits we are a "small" net exporter...the question is -- HOW SMALL?
Petronas is the National Oil Corporation. It has been reporting billions of net profits, RM36billion in the last repiorted financial year -- and rising -- for the past few years, which implies the oil fields are contributing more and more to the nation's coffers.And our Lucky Country has reported more oil field finds recently.

Could it be the Government itself HAS NOT BEEN PRUDENT in its spending?
Could it could better advice that the Government re-look at its Budget.
Could it be that the Government has been IMPRUDENT spending billions on bailouts, year after year, after year, after ....
(Did we see any proseecution of those idiots who plundered the country's riches?

Meanwhile, fellow Malaysians, please change your lifestyle:

*Don't work 9-to-5, work 9AM-to11PM;

**Don't drive to work arriving at 8.30AM;
Go by bus or LRT -- ASrrive at 10AM

*** Don't send your child to kindergarten,
Wait to start school the child is SE7EN...

**** You don't need to rest over the wickedend,
Sell Kacang Puteh or Nasi Lemak or Chap Fun to augment your present job's income

***** You people don't need to go away to Cameron Highlands for your annual holiday.
Jest join your Dad and Mah-in-law to play Mahjong or Pahjong.
Jest don't play for Money, for fun-d, rite!

The Star report cts:

”What we are doing now is to create a sound financial base for future generations.”

He said the removal of subsidies was part of prudent macro financial management and was necessary for Malaysia to have good governance.

Najib said one change in lifestyle which Malaysians had to make was to accept public transport.

He said the Government’s move to increase fuel prices was coupled with a greater focus on public transport.

He said the Cabinet decided yesterday to set up a fund which would receive the savings gained from the removal of fuel subsidies.

“The fund will be used to develop new public transport facilities and to improve the existing systems,” he said, adding that current systems needed to have greater connectivity and to be better integrated.

Najib said a Cabinet committee on public transport would be set up to implement these changes.

The committee would be chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, with Najib as deputy.

Najib said Malaysians should discard the preconception that public transport was for the lower class.

“Some ministers have told me that they use the light rail transit to go for functions,” he said.

On the massive quantum of 30 sen, Najib said it was still lower than the total increase last year.

Asked if the Government had to put aside political risks to go ahead with the increase, Najib said there would only be a political risk if the people did not understand the reasons for such a move.

Meanwhile, Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the Government’s decision to raise the price of fuel was a brave one, which had to be carried out following a sharp increase in world oil prices. (The Star report ends...my nightmare 2, for todae...)
