ACA watch on 1,500 big spenders
11 Nov 2006

PUTRAJAYA: The Anti-Corruption Agency is closing in on more than 1,500 big spenders in the public and private sectors who have been living beyond their means.

It has already opened files on 116 people who have clearly flouted graft laws.

The overall focus is on those in law enforcement, issuance of permits and contracts, procurements and tenders.

The anti-graft agency is also looking at individuals in non-governmental agencies, the private sector and politicians.

ACA director-general Datuk Seri Zulkipli Mat Noor said state directors had been told to continue identifying those living beyond their means.

"We have started tracking them. We will go in if the situation warrants."

The criteria used to identify those living beyond their means includes instances of people owning cars and houses that they could not possibly afford.

For example, if a government officer earned RM2,000 a month but had three cars and two houses, he would be a prime candidate for investigation.

"We are looking at those living beyond their means and who raise suspicion with their extravagant lifestyle," he said in an interview yesterday.

He said the campaign was part of the ACA’s proactive style adopted from 2004 after years of largely reacting to complaints.

Investigations had been made more effective with emphasis on, among other things, forensic accounting, engineering, intelligence and surveillance.

Zulkipli urged heads of departments to report staff who made expensive purchases despite earning average salaries.

"If anyone raises their suspicion with their lavish lifestyle, heads of department should report them to us."

On statements that the ACA could not investigate cases of political corruption as such offences were confined to political parties, he said the agency had the authority if there were elements of vote-buying.

"Vote-buying is a corrupt practice and they take many forms... Giving out money or assets, sponsoring travel and giving out goodies.

"People can say anything they want but there are laws, and nobody is above them," he said.

There Can Only Be A ‘Pivotal’ Malaysian Nation
November 10th, 2006

By Farish A. Noor

Those who call for the protection of the Malays as the ‘pivotal race’ of Malaysia fail to note these political realities and the historical subtleties that render such ideological over-simplification useless and futile. Yet in the weeks and months to come, as Malaysia heads slowly towards a political crisis that seems to be on the cards for all, it is imperative that we remind ourselves that the only thing that can still keep this country together is the abstract idea of a universal Malaysian citizenship, premised on the belief and conviction that there is, and has always been, a complex and hybrid Malaysian nation after all: despite what the history books and keris-wielding politicians may tell you.

Johor Umno against meritocracy system

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Umno will table a motion to reject the use of meritocracy and the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English in the debate on the motion of thanks on the president's speech at the party's general assembly next week.

Its information chief Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi, who will table the motion, said it was important to bring up the issues as the grassroots Malays felt they had been left out because of the system.

Johor Umno liaison chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, had touched on the issues in his speech at the opening of the Johor Umno convention last Sunday.

The motion rejecting the system was unanimously supported by the 57 Johor Umno delegates.

Mohd Puad said he would produce new evidence to back Johor Umno's rejection of the two systems.

His speech would also touch on the Malay agenda in the 9th Malaysia Plan and also on the Bangsa Malaysia concept.

Mohd Puad said Johor Umno also wanted the government to give more serious attention to addressing the problems on apostasy. -- Bernama

NB: THe emphasis (bolded THUS) is mine, not Johor Mentri Besar's, for Abdul Ghani is much bolder as he has UMNO, especially UMNO Youth and Putera UMNO, behind him. It makes Malaysians like me very scraed. ~~ Desi

UPDATEd Nov 12 @2.15PM:

ACA is not going to succeed if the back scratching culture is not eradicated... and like Selangor MB said, if you catch one scrather and not the other, what would ppl say. better let sleeping dog lies.

if ACA succeed against all odds, we will have a lot of ppl with itchy back in negaraku. is that a good thing? never chase a dog into a blind alley!

it is a delicate situation and we havent even factor in the Dr M response. I am not surprise if Dr M want to see some results of ACA work. Otherwise, all this ACA posturing is just another sandiwara for a very tired audience.

Are they ACA trying to nab the fat people who wear big underwears (big spenders)? Hmmm...interesting.

DESI: Seefei, Malaysians are indeed a very tired, and patience tested, audience as far as the Battle Cry by the Governement Against Corruption is concerned.

Immediately facing the ACA chief are SElangor State Assemblyman Zakaria Md Deros and two other Klang Councillors cases; the Malacca "Close Ine Eye" MP vis Customs case; the Senator&Son&Company in Cloned AP case; yes, the once buried 18 High-Profile VVOP cases.

ROP os eoither Rest in Peace, or Rise If Possible. I hope it's the latter in BolehLand.
More Sandiwara? Brudder SeeFeei and Imran, let's get the front row seats at the PWTC. Except please serve us tehtarik will do, not Eye-Paper-Spray.

Fat people? These wolves comes in all sizes -- and the underwear may be of Au, Ag or Pt! -- and the outer wear be Gucci, Prada or DezSeeImp!(c):)

Be optimistics, even if ACA failed to prosecute any of the members from ruling parties, at least they still have a case for opposition's.

*Grinning* does it ring a bell for you?
