Bridge would have
started 1-1/2 years
ago: Mahathir

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday said if he had not stepped down from the premiership in 2003, work on the scenic bridge, meant to replace the Malaysian half of the Johor Causeway, would have started two and a half years ago.

He said this to reporters when asked to comment on the government's decision to scrap the construction of the bridge.

Earlier, Mahathir delivered a plenary address on "Leadership Crisis and Strategic Communication Techniques" at the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (Ikim) here.

Here is the full transcript of the press conference:

"We've got to consult all quarters when doing something in our own country. If we do not consult outsiders, we might do the wrong thing and will have to bear the consequences.

"Consultation with the neighbours is very good. If the neighbour disagreed, we have to take into consideration their views, even if what we are doing is within our own country.

"At that time, it (Singapore) did not even have a position, we were about to start (construction) but I retired. If I did not leave, it would have started two and a half years ago.

"If we wait, they will find so many things (reasons) more. We have to give them sand, air space... Now, we no longer ask about the price of water which is sold at three sen. It is quiet now. That way, we would be in better terms with our neighbours.

Is it not a waste of money?

"It is okay... I wasted a lot more money, the mega projects.

What are the legal implications?

"No legal implications. We were already there, if we had started, there will be no problem. If we wait, they dig here and there, and find precious stones."

What about opposition from Johoreans?

"They did not oppose as far as I can see. Even now, they are not opposed to having the bridge...But we are building the bridge in our place, (they) want us to expand Singapore, what is the connection?

"Just like the case of our money in the CPF. It is our money ... but we do not ask (for the money) back, we are good people.

"The CIQ, I heard Singapore plans to turn it into the biggest shopping complex in Southeast Asia. Singapore suggested it, it could not be illogical, right? This is not being sarcastic. This is sincere. Turn it into a shopping complex - beautiful and sophisticated.

"We have to look after the people's heart. Johor, according to Singapore, is full of crimes. If no bridge, no causeway, Singaporeans won't go to Johor. So there won't be crimes. ... As usual, we keep quiet."

Are you surprised with the decision?

"I am not surprised. Many times the government reserves decision when people disagree... toll hikes...The government is caring. Even (with) people outside our country, with our neighbours, the good ones, the nearby ones. We must be very nice to them.

"We have been taking into account Singapore's views ... They do not want the bridge, they want the causeway because it is nostalgic to Goh Chok Tong, we just accept it."

DESIDERATA:
For once I am reproducing a nu'es item in FOOL without any Highlighting although much of Cybill Shepherd's moonLIGHTING is on my mind -- Desi's not so BOLD this morn!:).

Jest seeking a mGf's help to understand the MEANing-ness of what SATIRE is all about -- from TV SMITH@mycen.com.my...
I have a feeling his Mum even at birth (HIS-lah, cAnt be HERS rite!) had an inkling he was going into video, filming and wordSMITHing line...

"if you don't know what satire is even if it bites you in the ass, just call it a joke..."

Desi's parting shot... OR isIT PUTting short?

I recall former premier Tun Dr Mahathir, soon after the GE2004, when commenting on Barisan Nasional's lanslide victory of commanding 90% mandatre of the Rakayt, told the Press something to the effect (Paraphrasing here...)
THAT
had he known that Pak Lah was so popular with the voters, he (Dr Mahathir) would have stepped down as Prime Minister much, much earlier.

Prime words.

Past.
Present.
Future.

Desi,

According to Robert Harris (http://www.virtualsalt.com/satire.htm), there is not satire without a corrective purpose. He defines satire as "a literary manner which blends a critical attitude with humor and wit to the end that human institutions or humanity may be improved. The true satirist is conscious of the frailty of institutions of man's devising and attempts through laughter not so much to tear them down as to inspire a remodeling" (Thrall, et al 436).

Some people criticise, though with some jest and wits to show-off, but, have the ultimate aim of sarcarsm to hurt others - not with good intention to help improve/correct a situation. One such person is that chocolate guy - endowed with a gape too big to close, so has to offend with verbal diarrhea, even at his own kind. A mere green sour grape, a hypocrite, who could only impress on hindsight, but quivered when faced with a real-time problem, blaming everyone including a Soros for own inability, let alone, planning for the future. He has a chip on his shoulder, but has never realised that chip could be a bird dropping!

I also recall our wise Dr M saying not too long ago that the 92% BN victory in GE2004 is not so good for Malaysia. He went on to postulate that a weakened opposition front does the country no good in the long run, and that it's better to just have a majority of "... not more than 80%" blah..blah..blah...

I suspect that this, and all the subtle and not-so-subtle digs at Pak Lah's governance - maybe something to do with a tiny weeny bit of "tak syok" feeling?

The curtain is not going to come down soon on this ridiculous sandiwara of political wrangling - I hope ZamZam is not going to censor future newsbites by the entertaining Dr M. Makes my day to hear him rant!

It's good of you to remind of Dr Mahathir's remarks -- they all add up -- in your assessment which I concur -- of a fading light now envious of his successor making his "own stamp" on Malaysia's history in the making. But your astute obs on ZamZam kali-kali kazam is truly a concern to people like Desio who had been in journalism, and know a li'l of Zam's background -- this guy does no good to modern times with his recent pronouncements like Godspeak on what media should or should not be. No one person in his/her right mind would even dare to begin to impose trains of thoughts government media practice or any field of intellectual endeavour. I "hope" Pak Lah is using him on a parttime basis.

If you compare The Sun's coverage on Tun Dr Mahathir's latest remarks, the Star's paled in comparison, and it's press like The Star which would tamely go the ZamZam way -- "play safe".

In sincerely pray more Malaysians support theSUN -- we truly need a more vibrant press to keep The Star -- which is thriving commercially by default -- on its toes before it becomes another monopolistic situation like what the Chinese Presss was heading until Oriental Daily News arrived to shake up the Chinese media scene a little.
Anak Merdeka - you read Manadrin? Maybe keep us more informed on the Chinese media scene, can? I promise I would "steal" nuggets off thy blog! Mutual exchange yes --we want to grow the 5th Estate together... Salute to Y&A ones like thee.:)

I'm honoured Desi thinks it fit to include me in joining him to grow the 5th Estate together. Actually, I am kindergarten kid compared to season journos like u. BUT thinking aloud always makes for interesting debate, eh? And you're welcome to fish at my place.

I no read Mandarin, which is MOST unfortunate. In fact, I am also looking for some one who can start an English blog specifically highlighting news from the Chinese media for us semi-bananas (can speak cannot read/write).

If Desi can convince his gFs to do a social duty to his fellow patriotic Malaysian bloggers, then please let me know about it. Such a blogsite will be an important reference point.

It is a shame for ppl like us to miss out on the juicy stuff by "recalcitrant" Chinese writers and instead have to make do with ZamZam kali Zam's sanitised version.

Btw, I am MOST impressed by your decoding of Dr M's "Hindu God Muslim Priest". WOW WOW! You have just shot up 100 notches on Anak Merdeka's list of impressive undercover blog celebrities. Unless it's not something new, I thought it was so very clever of you ... and so very sly of Dr M. hehe... Sly fox met his match.
