The VP of the isle, a happy go-lucky chap, was chanced upon by his Boss one Monday morn, and Mr Prez asked of the assistant why he looked so happy.
Smiling, the VP replied: I was thanking the Good Lord for the blessed life I live. Just now on thy entry, I was still savouring the happy memories of all the young maidens i had screwed, all thanks to my superior position!"
The following morn, not mundane being Tuesday, VP entered Boss' carpeted Red House penthouse and, sirprise of surprises, caught Mr Prez in his smiling pose. He was loonking at the map of their I-land.
"Hey, Boss, you look chirpy today, what's UP?"
"Oh, my deputy, just as you entered I was looking at this map, and I was and still am so happy that I am lord of all I survey.

KUALA LUMPUR: He was once called a rogue, a moron and an enemy of Malaysia. Yesterday, international currency speculator George Soros was absolved of being the culprit behind the 1997 Asian financial crisis and embraced as a friend by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, his longtime accuser.
The former prime minister said he accepted Soros’ explanation that the billionaire was not personally responsible for the devaluation of the ringgit almost a decade ago.
“The question of forgiveness does not arise. I accepted his explanation. Of course, my view about him (Soros) has changed. That’s why I’m talking to him now,” Dr Mahathir said, adding that he thought Soros had caused the run on
the ringgit based on what he had read in the Press back then.
Malaysia’s former premier and the billionaire held a joint Press conference after their meeting here yesterday.
Soros was here to promote his book, The Age of Fallibility, and to address the alumni of the London School of Economics at their 20th anniversary dinner last night.
Dr Mahathir said he was still concerned about the activities of currency traders, claiming they could destroy many countries.
Soros, however, said speculators should not be held responsible because it was the duty of the financial authorities to manage the functioning of the market.
"I, as a speculator, have acted according to the prevailing rules. Knowing the market, I believe sometimes it is appropriate to impose some restrictions on capital moves," said Soros, adding that Malaysia’s authorities made a mistake in keeping the fixed exchange rate regime for too long.
He, however, conceded that Malaysia’s capital controls helped reduce the country’s economic damage.
Apart from blaming Soros for the financial crisis, Dr Mahathir has on a few occasions implied a Jewish conspiracy for the world’s problems, particularly those involving Muslim countries.
After his heart-to-heart talks with Soros, who is Jewish, Dr Mahathir explained that he was not against Jews.
"Somehow or other, I have been labelled anti-Semitic. I’m not anti-Semitic, not anti-Jew, but I’m very much against what is happening in Palestine where the Israelis have tried to out-terrorise the Palestinians. That’s a wrong way to resolve a problem."
Blaming the Press, Dr Mahathir said he merely stated that the Jews had a lot of influence in the American government, a view he said Soros did not agree with, but that was his stand.
"I have Jewish friends and most of my friends don’t think that I’m anti-Semitic," he added.
Both men told the Press that they did not discuss personal issues during the meeting but were focused on global peace, especially their shared views against the war in Iraq and against many of the international policies of American President George W. Bush.
Soros also managed to convince Dr Mahathir that while he appreciated the former prime minister’s efforts to criminalise war, both of them agreed that in some instances war would be unavoidable.
The billionaire explained that he was in favour of the "responsibility to protect" principle where the international community, and not an individual country, acted against rulers who oppressed their own people.

KUALA LUMPUR: State religious authorities must stop spying, snooping and the practice of looking for couples to be charged with khalwat (close proximity).
Perlis Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin said such practices were against the Islamic principles of privacy and denoted the act of trespassing.
"It’s an embarrassment to Islam to see religious officers going to hotels and demanding the guest list.
"Islam does not encourage people to look for acts of sins.
"The principle of amar makruf nahi mungkar (performing good deeds and abhorring evil) must be implemented only when sins and crimes are committed in the open.
"To invade an individual’s privacy is against Islam."
Dr Mohd Asri explained that prevention against sins or evil deeds must only be confined to those that would affect society and the environment, or when it would encourage others to commit them publicly.
He said the recent case of a khalwat raid mistakenly carried out against an elderly American couple in Langkawi was an example of an operation that did not follow Islamic principles.
"There were many other similar cases where local husbands and wives were raided in their homes.
"Such activities give the impression that Islam encourages invasion of privacy."
He also questioned the practice of bringing along unauthorised people for khalwat raids such as the Press.
"What is the purpose of bringing along the media, and sometimes members of the public?
"Are we trying to shame a private individual publicly or are we really abhorring sins?"
On whether he is condoning vice activities, Dr Mohd Asri said: "There’s a hadith (sayings of the Prophet) that says ‘if you conceal the shame of others, Allah will conceal your shame in the hereafter’, The Prophet is not asking us to commit sins but he has made it clear for us not to find the faults of others."
He hoped religious enforcement authorities would prioritise their job, such as addressing the menace of Mat Rempit, which is giving a bad name to Islam as most of them are Muslims, instead of snooping around for couples in private residences.
Some moderate Muslim groups have also alleged that religious authorities have their priorities wrong as some divorced Muslim women find it difficult to get mut’ah (monetary gift), maintenance and guardianship of their children, with the authorities usually claiming a lack of manpower to enforce the law.
To prove his seriousness, Dr Mohd Asri said Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Shahidan Kassim had agreed to hold a course on khalwat prevention based on Islamic principles soon.
In Malaysia, religion is the prerogative of the state government. Federal authorities only have advisory powers in such matters.

Road tolls to rise by up to 60% - source

The government will announce on Dec 14 a sharp rise in road toll rates to help trim state subsidies, a source said on Dec 13, in a move that could spark a public outcry and raise inflation.
Tolls will go up by as much as 60% and will affect users of five highways in and around the capital, Kuala Lumpur, said the source, who attended an official briefing on the matter.
"The new rates take effect on Jan 1," the source, who declined to be identified, told Reuters . "That's our New Year present."
A spokesman for the Works Minister confirmed that an announcement would be made at a news conference at 3.15pm on Dec 14. He declined to give details.
Under toll concession agreements that critics say favour operators, the government has to reimburse operators if traffic volumes and revenues fall short of pre-agreed projections.
Most of the highways were approved in the 1990s by the administration of then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, which made privatisation and mega-projects one of its hallmarks.
Works Minister Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu said recently the government would have to fork out RM2 billion in compensation to five highway operators if toll rates were not revised.
The operators include listed firms Gamuda Bhd and Lingkaran Trans Kota Holdings Bhd (Litrak).
Litrak operates the 40km Damansara-Puchong highway, where the toll is to rise 60%, to RM1.60 from RM1, the source said.
"The real toll is RM2.10, so the government is still subsidising 50 sen for each user," the source said.
Residents along the densely populated stretch had protested strongly against an initial proposal to levy a toll of RM1.50, forcing the government to fix it at RM1.
Some 418,000 vehicles used the highway daily on average, reflecting a 14.5% compounded annual growth rate for the past seven years, rating firm RAM said in a review of Litrak.
Government officials told the briefing that one reason for the shortfall in toll collection was due to motorists switching to alternative non-toll roads, the source said.
The toll hikes, however, will not apply to Malaysia's biggest toll-road firm, Projek Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan (PLUS), a PLUS spokeswoman said.
PLUS' rate increase is fixed at 10% every three years and the next increase is not due until January 2008. Malaysia's annual inflation was 3.1% in October year-on-year, down from a 7-year-high of 4.8% in March. -- Reuters

Share prices of Gamuda Bhd and Lingkaran Trans Kota Holdings Bhd (Litrak) closed higher on Dec 14 after the government announced an increase of up to 60% in toll rates for five highways in the Klang Valley.
Gamuda and its 38%-owned Litrak are the concession holders for the 40km Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP). Gamuda also has a stake in the consortium that holds the concession for the Kesas Shah Alam Highway. From Jan 1, the toll for LDP will be increased from RM1 to RM1.60.
(Desi: Yes, confirms the Reuters report of 60% rise.)
Gamuda closed 10 sen up at RM4.78 on 2.02 million shares. The warrants ended the day also 10 sen up at 72 sen with 1.85 million units done. Litrak closed two sen up to RM3.06 but off the early high of RM3.18. There were 961,500 shares done.
MTD Infraperdana Bhd, the concessionaire for the Karak Highway and East Coast Highway, closed four sen up at RM1.14 with 570,400 shares done.

Only in NegaraKu the Government is handicapped in giving out compensation guarantees to privatised unit owners like tolled highways and independent power producers.
Paradise on earth, who says there isn't any?

Downgrading the PM's perrformance
A cyber-friend recently turned terrestrial mate told me in jest that he "observed" I had diown-graded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdulah Ahmad Badawi from a grade six to 4! Four in Kantonis is pronounced "Sei" and you must ask either sisdar Helen or brudder 4f what IT means!
I responded to Din that the straw that broke the camel's back (Yeah, YL Chong is officially now a Camel, have a smoke on Desi!) was the last UMNO General Assembly which I had described as the almost "Curtains Down" on the Epic Play on the PWTC Stage.
I've "borrowed" fellow scribe Kim Quek's article sighted at RJK's Malaysia-Today to recall the issues which coincided a lot with mine (or vice versa) which gave rise to my Re-Assessment of Pak Lah as our Prime Minister. I'll give him till the end of his first elected term to do a Re-Rating. I would like to be given a chance to upgrade him at least back to 6 which I started at based on his pronouncments of Commitment to certain Policies on assuming leadership as CEO of NegaraKu from Dr Mahathir Mohamad in November 2003.
I have stopped weeping for Malaysia -- as the tears have run dry. I hope not our nation's oil-lah, oh Pak Lah!:(

Did Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi commit an act of corruption during the pre-council meeting on the eve of the recent UMNO General Assembly when he announced that RM3 million would be given to each of the 191 UMNO divisions? The answer is a clear-cut yes, as the ingredients necessary to establish a corrupt act are all present.
On 13th November 2006, in a closed-door briefing, Pak Lah informed the delegates to the 57th UMNO Annual Assembly (held from 14th to 17th Nov) that a surprise year-end “bonus” of RM600 million would be dished out in the form of small contracts covering the whole country except Sarawak (where UMNO has no divisions). On that same day, the deputy minister of works, Mohd Zin Mohamed, issued a letter to the Public Works (JKR) chief asking him to execute Pak Lah’s announcement, which was to be divided into RM3 million for each of the parliamentary constituencies (totalling 191, Sarawak excluded). Mohd Zin asked that all district engineers consult “local leaders” to ascertain the projects, all of which were to be completed “within 2 months”.
Following this letter, JKR issued guidelines as to how this RM3 million for each parliamentary constituency was to be spent. These guidelines were that the contracts were meant for Class F contractors (who were all bumiputras), each entitled to one contract only, amount to be no more than RM200,000. The work is to start within three days and is to be completed within 2006, payment made by end January 2007, and projects to comprise minor works on roads, drains, pipes, electrical wiring, building renovations, etc.
It is clear that this RM600 million year-end bonus is intended for UMNO grass root leaders, most of whom are Class F contractors surviving on government contracts. If this is not the case, then how can Pak Lah explain the fact that the state of Sarawak, which needs this kind of spending most but which has no UMNO presence, is completely left out of this scheme? Furthermore, district engineers were specifically asked to consult “local leaders” to ascertain the contracts. Who can these “local leaders” be, if not UMNO’s divisional leader in each of the 191 parliamentary constituencies? (surely they can’t be PAS, DAP or PKR leaders?)
Dubious allocation
The unorthodox manner with which this RM600 million was announced befits more an emergency relief for a catastrophe such as that occasioned by a major tsunami or an 8.0 Richter scale earth quake rather than for routine petty works. The announcement came out of the blue and the pattern of distribution of spending seemed artificially carved out for bonus-giving purpose, not for maintaining local infrastructures. Moreover, the fact that the official letter from the Ministry of Works had been prepared and signed that same morning of 13th November 2006, even before the pre-council meeting, means that the whole exercise had been premeditated.
In the press conference held following the closed-door meeting of November 13, Pak Lah justified this RM600 million allocation by saying that it was needed to top up the earlier allocation of RM1.5 billion under the Ninth Malaysian Plan (RMK9) which, he said, was nearly depleted. He added “we have identified other minor projects for the rural community”. This claim was however contradicted by the Deputy Minister of Rural Development, Zainal Abidin bin Osman, in Parliament on November 15. Answering a query from PAS Member of Parliament, Salahuddin bin Ayub, Zainal Abidin said that his ministry had not been informed of this RM600 million for projects in rural areas.
Is it not strange that the Deputy Minister had no knowledge of this fund which was intended to be spent for projects under his ministry on an emergency basis? Shouldn’t such urgent projects, in the first place, have been presented by the Rural Development Ministry to the Treasury and the Cabinet for urgent approval, before making the announcement by the Minister of Rural Development (not the Prime Minister)? Did the PM or the Rural Development Minister know what these urgent projects were? Obviously not, otherwise the Deputy Minister of Works would not have asked the district engineers to find out the answers from the “local leaders”.
What a strange way of throwing away massive public funds -- the PM asking 3,000 to 5,000 Class F contractors to finish spending all the RM600 million in the record speed of six weeks, without the relevant ministries knowing what these supposedly urgent projects were! Surely this will be a big feast for the thousands of lucky cronies who will be simultaneously picked based on political connection and given bonanzas free of competitive pricing, as such tight schedules of implementation would preclude any open tender.
And since this is public money, to be used on public projects, is it also not strange that the decision was not announced to the public but was hurriedly conveyed to UMNO delegates in a closed-door meeting on the eve of an UMNO General Assembly (and two days later denied in Parliament)? It is not so, if one understands that the impending party assembly was no ordinary annual assembly, but a crucial one in which the tussle for power between the former and the incumbent party leaders might play out. Knowing how deeply ingrained the tradition of money politics in the UMNO hierarchy is, what better way was there to ensure a hassle-free convention for the incumbent leader than to declare an instant bumper bonus to all and sundry?
While Pak Lah and his power clique may congratulate themselves on the smooth sailing the party President had in consolidating his support during the party assembly, which was contributed in no small way by this pecuniary measure, does Pak Lah realise the high price he has to pay in securing this support through such dishonourable conduct?
Breach of law
In the first place, there is no way he could free himself from the taint of corruption, in the face of such glaring incriminating evidences. There was the motive and the benefit received, which was enhancing support within Pak Lah’s camp while neutralising potential opposition from Mahathir loyalists. And there was the unmistakable abuse of authority, breaching all established regulations and laws in dispensing public funds, much of which were wasted through inflated pricing and non-optimal utilisation.
We call this kind of unlawful practice money politics, abuse of power and corruption -- the very evils that Pak Lah pledged to free this nation from when he took over the reign from his predecessor Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. In any democracy, such serious breach of law by the chief executive of a nation would have caused instant public uproar, with the mass media relentlessly pursuing the culprit, and law enforcement agencies such as the anti-corruption body, attorney general and the police moving in to investigate for possible offences. Such series of events will most likely lead to the resignation of the culprit, followed by prosecution.
Nothing of this sort will happen in Malaysia of course. As usual, our mass media (safe the Internet) and law enforcing agencies steadfastly play the “see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil” game, in spite of police reports being made. The double standards in the implementation of law is ever present everywhere -- one for the ruling elite, and another for the rest.
This incident serves as a stern reminder that the rule of law is still seriously impaired under the present political leadership, and that we are a far cry from the day when we can call our country a democracy. For those die-hard who are hoping against hope that Pak Lah will bring us the much yearned for reforms, and who still insist that he must given more time to fulfil his pledges, the present episode is good food for thought."

Average daily circulation of newspapers breaches 2.5 million
KUALA LUMPUR: The audited average net daily circulation of newspapers in the country for July 1, 2005 to June 30 this year has crossed the 2.5 million mark.
Of this, 2.3 million copies were circulated in the peninsula, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) Malaysia’s latest figures.
Chinese language newspapers enjoyed the highest circulation for the period with 999,678 copies, a growth of 9% over last year, followed by English language newspapers, which grew 4% to 679,015 copies.
Bahasa Melayu newspapers experienced a decline of 3% to 666,724 copies.
Among the English dailies, The Star recorded the highest circulation of 310,008 copies daily for the period.
In announcing the figures yesterday, ABC chairman Henry Tan said: “Advertisers, more than before, are driven to maximise the return on their media investments.”
He said ABC was an important link between advertisers and media companies as it provided detailed audited circulation data that could help advertisers optimise returns on investment.
ABC was looking to recruit more members, he said.
“Ideally, we would like every publisher in the country to become a member of the industry body,” he added.
ABC currently has 84 members.
“It only costs a few hundred ringgit to be audited. (With the audit), ABC puts a value to the circulation figures submitted by the respective publishers,” he said.
Tan said advertisers had a right to question a publisher if the latter’s circulation figures were not audited.
Meanwhile, at the same event, Media Specialists Association (MSA) launched its website, which can be accessed at www.mymsa.org.
MSA aims, among others, to promote and develop the interests of members while establishing industry standards of performance and accountability.

Average daily circulation of newspapers breaches 2.5 million
KUALA LUMPUR: The audited average net daily circulation of newspapers in the country for July 1, 2005 to June 30 this year has crossed the 2.5 million mark.
Of this, 2.3 million copies were circulated in the peninsula, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) Malaysia’s latest figures.
Chinese language newspapers enjoyed the highest circulation for the period with 999,678 copies, a growth of 9% over last year, followed by English language newspapers, which grew 4% to 679,015 copies.
Bahasa Melayu newspapers experienced a decline of 3% to 666,724 copies.
Among the English dailies, The Star recorded the highest circulation of 310,008 copies daily for the period.
In announcing the figures yesterday, ABC chairman Henry Tan said: “Advertisers, more than before, are driven to maximise the return on their media investments.”
He said ABC was an important link between advertisers and media companies as it provided detailed audited circulation data that could help advertisers optimise returns on investment.
ABC was looking to recruit more members, he said.
“Ideally, we would like every publisher in the country to become a member of the industry body,” he added.
ABC currently has 84 members.
“It only costs a few hundred ringgit to be audited. (With the audit), ABC puts a value to the circulation figures submitted by the respective publishers,” he said.
Tan said advertisers had a right to question a publisher if the latter’s circulation figures were not audited.
Meanwhile, at the same event, Media Specialists Association (MSA) launched its website, which can be accessed at www.mymsa.org.
MSA aims, among others, to promote and develop the interests of members while establishing industry standards of performance and accountability.

RM88,000
in scam
PENANG: Thinking that he had won US$1mil (RM3.6mil) in a lottery via the Internet, a 27-year-old engineer followed instructions and deposited RM88,000 into a bank account of an unknown individual, said to be from China as processing fee.
Unbeknown to him, the man on the end of the telephone line was a swindler who had cheated numerous others from Johor and Kuala Lumpur.
The Bayan Lepas factory engineer received an SMS in early September instructing him to deposit 10% of the “winning” amount into an overseas bank account as processing fee and international insurance.
The engineer then called the number and was told by the man, who spoke in Mandarin, that he had won the US$1mil that was being held by a Hong Kong-based bank.
He managed to convince the engineer that he had won the lottery.
The engineer borrowed money from relatives and friends and between September and November deposited RM88,000 into the bank account.
After failing to come up with the rest of the money, he told the man that he would deposit the remaining sum after getting his winnings.
The engineer became suspicious when the man said “no” to him and kept on pressing him for more money.
He lodged a police report on Nov 11 after several friends he consulted told him that it was a scam.
A businessman in George Town received a similar SMS on Thursday claiming that he had won US$1.4mil (RM5.04mil) but he did not fall for the scam.
He reported the matter to the police.
OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamidsaid the public should not be easily taken in by good news which seemed too good to be true.
“One should not be too gullible or greedy as many people have lost their life savings after falling for such scams. Do not be too eager to part with your hard earned money.”

Desi Detours into Business Bytes
Yesterday, when all my troubles seemed not too far away...
Desi intimated to my EsteemedReaders (I like to get close to my ER (especially of the opposirte gendeAr like Helen, Sabrina and Housey?...:) I would be taking three-week "sick eave". Must clarify that the blardy Dioc refused to sign on a predetermined Borang, so I'm signing one myself. The "leave" is a respite from all the sandiwara starring "sickos" on the PWTC Stage, temporarily shifted to squatter in "small" houses at Putrajaya, or Wisma MCA, or Wisma MIC (Is there one nyet?).
So I'll render National Service in educating some ER who do business 24/7 to survive in the harsh Malaysian environs, getting harsher by the day -- or the die-by-die as we sweat to earn an extra 10 ringgit to put kaya on B&B! -- when the Barbarian of Globalisation enters quiety in the steel of the night, and the elected Knight is not minding/mending the store.
My first offering is plugged out of a new site I have been stealing peeps at, and if you "play" the stock market a li'l, the following is sausage for thee.

Whenever the index is trending upwards the euphoria is upon the investors. Same could be said for how the girl treats the boy whenever she is happy, jolly mood or whatever good mood. When the index reached its peak the investors will start selling to reap profits and retreat from the market. Shag, orgasm, ejaculate and pull out.
Whenever the index is going bearish, gloom and sometimes doom are upon the investors. Same could be said for how the girl treats the boy whenever she is, oh well, she could be bad to the boy whenever she wants for no reasons actually! At the lowest point investors would bargain hunt for cheap stocks with good uptrend potential. Just like the guy has to start picking the pieces from fights or simply pure bullying by the girl, and the guy is always wrong, from the girl's point of view. (In the eyes of the market, many investors are wrong.)
Chart the movements into a single graph, you will get a series of peaks and troughs over time. Some downs are remarkably evenly distanced. A result of pre-period and period period. Post period generally show an uptrend but is not guaranteed. Very unpredictable. It is the unpredictable element that cause the massive plunge. Frequent, rapid and massive movements vertically and horizontally in the stock market could cause massive stroke or heart attack, be it intra-day, daily, weekly, montly or annually. Same could be said for girls' moodswing attack on guys, they simply drive you crazy. You just wish to bang your head on the wall or have your right chest hammered or simply just run and slam yourself into the wall and die.
Leave early before it is too late.
But if you find a lady who is contrary to the norms, stick to it. Going against the crowd and be a contrarian. You know what I mean, mate.

Fear of change a blow to ICT
PENANG: Not many businesses are using information and communications technology (ICT) or websites to market their products and services due to fear of change, said a web developer.
Webture Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Eric Yam said many were still doing business the conventional way because they feared change due to a lack of ICT knowledge.
“There are also those who think that it is only good for global trading. But this is wrong. The website can also reach out to local customers,” he said during his presentation on E-Commerce and How It Helps Domestic Conventional Businesses at the Penang ICT Week organised by the MCA ICT Resource Centre yesterday.
Yam said some entrepreneurs were unwilling to invest in ICT, or already had a website which failed to bring in revenue due to wrong focus.
“A beautiful web design is useless when there are few visitors or if download time is slow,” he said, adding that a successful website must include good design, applications and marketing.
On the cost of hiring a web designer, Yam said it varied depending on content and web features. The price could range from RM500 for work by a freelance designer to over RM80,000 for corporate websites.
Goon Tee Ho, sales manager of web-based software application company Teneo Technologies Sdn Bhd, said some SMEs already had websites but failed to maintain and update the content due to the cost factor.
Karen Soo, chief executive officer of MEP Meeting & Exhibition Planners Sdn Bhd, shared her success story on ICT adoption.
From having two desks, one notebook and a printer, her company had grown to a workforce of 30 people today, with ICT solutions allowing the staff to work faster and smarter.

Rats and RAT-tionalising
I like to tease my ER and conversationists that you should not jest give me one-liners -- OKay, those goblets of tehtarik dan caferoseriecino laced with praises taste sweeter than wine! -- but you ewxpand witha RAT-ionale, mousey one oso cun.
Actually what I try to promote here under the banner of democratic discourse is critical and ratiobal debate and exchange of views -- the clash of ideas will yield some insights which lend to our education and undersatnding, not necessary acceptance.
Good debaters don't win by flaming or labelling the opponents -- you counter with good arguments and let the audience decide which team's (or speaker's) views convince and thus win them over.
And you score some points some times with theatrics -- like Helen doing a tap dance, or standing on hwe head, to show one's gymnastic skills to drive home the point that being a girl/lady does not necesarily mean you lose out in certain "skills". Or Desi doing 100 metres in 9.9 (did I say seconds or wait a minute?) to show he can think as well as run on his feet!
But some parties think such theatrics can fool all the people all the tie. Of course, they fool some of their bed fellows out to have a bite of the loot while they swallow croc mouthfools.

Air cleared over keris act
PUTRAJAYA: After a two-hour meeting with the Umno Youth chief, MCA Youth came out from the meeting with a better understanding why Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein brandished the keris at the Umno Youth meeting recently. MCA Youth chief Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said the wing understood that the act was a symbol to show it was a trust for Hishammuddin to carry out his responsibilities to the nation.
“We raised our concern with Hishammuddin and after his explanation, the MCA now has full confidence that he will not used (sic) the keris against the Chinese or other races.
Desi: Visualise the pic-lah! OFF TO A GOOD START: Liow shaking hands with Hishammuddin before their meeting at the Ministry of Education premises in Putrajaya, which set the cordial mood of the discussion. With them are other MCA Youth officials.
“I think the grassroots will understand,” he said after leading his exco members to meet Hishammuddin at the Education Ministry here yesterday.
Liow was responding to a question whether it would be easy for the MCA to allay the Chinese community uneasiness over Hishammuddin’s act.
Hishammuddin, who was also present at the press conference, said it was the responsibility of all Youth leaders to reassure the Chinese community that they should not be uneasy.
“We discussed the keris. If you want to look at it negatively, of course you will say it is something to hurt. If you look at positively, you will see the responsibility of the person kissing the keris to carry out his duties,” he explained.
“If he does not comply with it, the keris is used against him. In the process of getting it through to the people, of course we have to face the sceptics out there. I hope the people will not see the keris as offensive or something to be feared.”
Hishammuddin said a lesson to be learnt from the Umno assembly was that other races could see that the status of the Malays and religion were still sensitive matters.
“The meeting today was frank, and the explanations by both sides accepted. Our task now is to build a stronger bond and move forward,” he added.
“My good relationship with MCA Youth is not built overnight. It took a lot of effort and I would like to translate it to Barisan Nasional Youth.”
Liow said the MCA Youth was happy with the discussion and that other issues, including education, were also raised.

Actually what I try to promote here under the banner of democratic discourse is critical and ratiobal debate and exchange of views -- the clash of ideas will yield some insights which lend to our education and undersatnding, not necessary acceptance.
Good debaters don't win by flaming or labelling the opponents -- you counter with good arguments and let the audience decide which team's (or speaker's) views convince and thus win them over.
And you score some points some times with theatrics -- like Helen doing a tap dance, or standing on hwe head, to show one's gymnastic skills to drive home the point that being a girl/lady does not necesarily mean you lose out in certain "skills". Or Desi doing 100 metres in 9.9 (did I say seconds or wait a minute?) to show he can think as well as run on his feet!
But some parties think such theatrics can fool all the people all the tie. Of course, they fool some of their bed fellows out to have a bite of the loot while they swallow croc mouthfools.

PUTRAJAYA: After a two-hour meeting with the Umno Youth chief, MCA Youth came out from the meeting with a better understanding why Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein brandished the keris at the Umno Youth meeting recently. MCA Youth chief Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said the wing understood that the act was a symbol to show it was a trust for Hishammuddin to carry out his responsibilities to the nation.
“We raised our concern with Hishammuddin and after his explanation, the MCA now has full confidence that he will not used (sic) the keris against the Chinese or other races.

Liow was responding to a question whether it would be easy for the MCA to allay the Chinese community uneasiness over Hishammuddin’s act.
Hishammuddin, who was also present at the press conference, said it was the responsibility of all Youth leaders to reassure the Chinese community that they should not be uneasy.
“We discussed the keris. If you want to look at it negatively, of course you will say it is something to hurt. If you look at positively, you will see the responsibility of the person kissing the keris to carry out his duties,” he explained.
“If he does not comply with it, the keris is used against him. In the process of getting it through to the people, of course we have to face the sceptics out there. I hope the people will not see the keris as offensive or something to be feared.”
Hishammuddin said a lesson to be learnt from the Umno assembly was that other races could see that the status of the Malays and religion were still sensitive matters.
“The meeting today was frank, and the explanations by both sides accepted. Our task now is to build a stronger bond and move forward,” he added.
“My good relationship with MCA Youth is not built overnight. It took a lot of effort and I would like to translate it to Barisan Nasional Youth.”
Liow said the MCA Youth was happy with the discussion and that other issues, including education, were also raised.

Maria Eva, a dangdut singer, announced Sunday that she had videotaped herself and a Golkar Party legislator having sex, but denied leaking it to the public.
Her lawyer, Ruhut Sitompul, said she did not know who had placed the footage, shot with a camera phone, on the Internet.
The video, less than one minute long, was sent to various cell phones and email addresses last week, forcing embarrassed Golkar leaders to form an investigation team to control the scandal.
Meanwhile, the whereabouts of the Golkar member in question, who can only be identified as YZ, are still unknown. Last week Golkar said he was in Australia, but it was rumored Sunday that he had returned to Jakarta.
In an interview with the Detik news portal, Ruhut said that unnamed Golkar figures had placed pressure on Maria to hide in Singapore for her safety.
He said some Golkar members had sent her an open airplane ticket and told her to leave for Singapore, but that he had advised to stay in Jakarta while considering a solution to the situation.
Ruhut did not return phone calls from The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
A senior Golkar official denied suggestions that the plane ticket had been issued through an official party decision.
"I attended no meeting that approved of such decision for her exile. Maybe one of our members sent the ticket without our notification," said Tadjuddin Nursaid, a member of Golkar's central board.
Akbar Tandjung, former Golkar chairman and House Speaker, said the incident was regrettable.
"We are all saddened by the scandal. I have been supportive of him as his senior inside the organization," Akbar said in Surabaya on Saturday, as quoted by Antara.
Akbar said that YZ had the right explain his actions in a future party examination session.
"Nobody can judge his actions before he gives a complete explanation. The investigation team is currently probing the incident," he added.
The team was established by Golkar to establish whether the video was authentic, determine the violation committed, and recommend steps in reaction.
Akbar said should the team find that YZ was the man in the footage, he would face serious punishment, possibly dismissal from the party.
"Let the team hear his explanation straight from him so we have a clear picture of the situation," he said.
Deputy chairman of the House Ethics Council Gayus Lumbuun said that they would have to examine the issue despite the physical absence of the individuals involved.
"The examination would go on despite Maria, or in this case YZ, being abroad. Their absences will not halt the examination and verification of the scandal," said Gayus, a member of the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle.
"There is no time limit on how long the Ethics Council has to finish the examination," he added.

After the expected criticsms being rained on the KBMC's enforcement of "DECENT DRESSING" highlighted in all media yesterday, it's also not surprising that Kelantan MB Nik Abdul Aziz came out to defend the Islamic party's stand. The party's raison d'etre is under siege, but I think it's bet to leave the Islamic heartland to the Moon. I can live with Kelantan, Terengganu and Perlis and Kedah as experimentation beds -- between PAS walking God-fearing ways and UMNO strutting Oil-money ways, Desi'd opt for the former. MB defends dress code
KOTA BARU: Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has defended the move to slap a RM500 fine on indecently dressed women workers in restaurants and retail outlets, saying it will help protect their virtue.
Women working in such businesses, he added, should respect the customs, culture and religious values of Kelantan when in public.
“A woman who wears an indecent outfit does not respect herself, so how can she expect men to respect her?” he said.
He said a woman's morality was something precious and should be guarded.
"Why do people keep their money in wallets or purses instead of walking about with it openly?” he retorted yesterday.
“This is because cash is something precious, just like a woman’s virtue.
The Kota Baru Municipal Council (MPKB) has announced that it will “no longer tolerate indecent dressing” by women, both Muslim and non-Muslim, noting that under local council by-laws, women who “dressed sexily or indecently” could be fined up to RM500.
It has also been reported that the MPKB can also fine the employers of “indecently dressed women.”
Nik Aziz said the council and the religious authorities had tried for years to generate awareness on proper attire in public but some women here had continued to be stubborn.
According to Nik Aziz, there was no denying that men would be aroused by a scantily- dressed woman, as this was human nature.
“It is an Islamic ruling, so nobody should undermine or question it,” said the PAS spiritual adviser, after closing a spiritual enrichment programme for women NGO Purnama here.
The programme was organised by the Tok Kenali Foundation, managed by former Lunas assemblyman Saifuddin Nasution. Also present was Nik Aziz’s wife, Datin Tuan Sabariah Tuan Ishak.
Under the council's dress code for women employed in retail outlets and restaurants, Muslims should wear outfits which reach down to their ankles as well as a tudung (headscarf), while non-Muslims should not wear outfits which expose their navels, show a lot of cleavage and emphasise the buttocks.

My only commentor2 now is the reiteration that PAS should be left by the Opposition Coalition to make its way in the Muslim heartland of Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis -- and the dictum that "The Rakyat gets the Government they deserve (by free election)" holds.

MB defends dress code
KOTA BARU: Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has defended the move to slap a RM500 fine on indecently dressed women workers in restaurants and retail outlets, saying it will help protect their virtue.
Women working in such businesses, he added, should respect the customs, culture and religious values of Kelantan when in public.
“A woman who wears an indecent outfit does not respect herself, so how can she expect men to respect her?” he said.
He said a woman's morality was something precious and should be guarded.
"Why do people keep their money in wallets or purses instead of walking about with it openly?” he retorted yesterday.
“This is because cash is something precious, just like a woman’s virtue.
The Kota Baru Municipal Council (MPKB) has announced that it will “no longer tolerate indecent dressing” by women, both Muslim and non-Muslim, noting that under local council by-laws, women who “dressed sexily or indecently” could be fined up to RM500.
It has also been reported that the MPKB can also fine the employers of “indecently dressed women.”
Nik Aziz said the council and the religious authorities had tried for years to generate awareness on proper attire in public but some women here had continued to be stubborn.
According to Nik Aziz, there was no denying that men would be aroused by a scantily- dressed woman, as this was human nature.
“It is an Islamic ruling, so nobody should undermine or question it,” said the PAS spiritual adviser, after closing a spiritual enrichment programme for women NGO Purnama here.
The programme was organised by the Tok Kenali Foundation, managed by former Lunas assemblyman Saifuddin Nasution. Also present was Nik Aziz’s wife, Datin Tuan Sabariah Tuan Ishak.
Under the council's dress code for women employed in retail outlets and restaurants, Muslims should wear outfits which reach down to their ankles as well as a tudung (headscarf), while non-Muslims should not wear outfits which expose their navels, show a lot of cleavage and emphasise the buttocks.

KOTA BARU: Women working in retail outlets and restaurants in Kelantan have been warned to mind their dressing or be prepared to face a fine.
The Kota Baru Municipal Council (MPKB) has announced that it would “no longer tolerate indecent dressing” by women, both Muslim and non-Muslim.
Public relations officer Mohd Azman Daham said that under local council by-laws women who “dressed sexily or indecently” could be fined up to RM500.
“Such outfits are prohibited here as it smears the reputation of Kota Baru and affects its status as an Islamic City,” he said in an interview.
He added that although punishment for indecent dressing was in place under the by-laws, it had not been totally enforced.
“But now, MPKB will no longer tolerate skimpy outfits, following mounting complaints from the public,” Mohd Azman said, adding that under the by-laws, women working in retail outlets should wear decent clothes.

Or: "Look at the babe, she must have just come back from Arabia, totally eclipsed from the sun in her attired except for a slit for her eyes to peep at what's going on..."
DEsi thinks after the recent happenings involving many of the local municiapal councils antics and initiatives, NegaraKU can save lots of taxpapyers money by disbanding ALL THE COUNCILS except for the one in Furong*, as there are enough experienced civil servants who will ensure the government machinery functions on AUTO-PILOT like how the airpplane pilots leave the craft on AUTO as they adjourn to the JOhns to do "unofficial" business.
Which brings me to a current development from the Other end of the world. From the Western front,

Tweens' are fast becoming the new teens

Zach Plante is close with his parents — he plays
baseball with them and, on weekends, helps with work
in the small vineyard they keep at their northern
California home.
Lately, though, his parents have begun to notice
subtle changes in their son. Among other things, he's
announced that he wants to grow his hair longer — and
sometimes greets his father with "Yo, Dad!"
"Little comments will come out of his mouth that have
a bit of that teen swagger," says Tom Plante, Zach's
dad.
Thing is, Zach isn't a teen. He's 10 years old — one
part, a fun-loving fifth-grader who likes to watch the
Animal Planet network and play with his dog and pet
gecko, the other a soon-to-be middle schooler who
wants an iPod.
In some ways, it's simply part of a kid's natural
journey toward independence. But child development
experts say that physical and behavioral changes that
would have been typical of teenagers decades ago are
now common among "tweens" — kids ages 8 to 12.
Some of them are going on "dates" and talking on their
own cell phones. They listen to sexually charged pop
music, play mature-rated video games and spend time
gossiping on MySpace. And more girls are wearing
makeup and clothing that some consider beyond their
years.
Zach is starting to notice it in his friends, too,
especially the way they treat their parents.
"A lot of kids can sometimes be annoyed by their
parents," he says. "If I'm playing with them at one of
their houses, then they kind of ignore their parents.
If their parents do them a favor, they might just say,
'OK,' but not notice that much."
The shift that's turning tweens into the new teens is
complex — and worrisome to parents and some
professionals who deal with children. They wonder if
kids are equipped to handle the thorny issues that
come with the adolescent world.
"I'm sure this isn't the first time in history people
have been talking about it. But I definitely feel like
these kids are growing up faster — and I'm not sure
it's always a good thing," says Dr. Liz Alderman, an
adolescent medicine specialist at Montefiore Medical
Center in New York City. She's been in practice for 16
years and has noticed a gradual but undeniable change
in attitude in that time.
She and others who study and treat children say the
reasons it's happening are both physical and social.
Bodies developing faster, studies show
Several published studies have found, for instance,
that some tweens' bodies are developing faster, with
more girls starting menstruation in elementary school
— a result doctors often attribute to improved
nutrition and, in some cases, obesity. While boys are
still being studied, the findings about girls have
caused some endocrinologists to lower the limits of
early breast development to first or second grade.
Along with that, even young children are having to
deal with peer pressure and other societal influences.
Beyond the drugs, sex and rock'n'roll their boomer and
Gen X parents navigated, technology and consumerism
have accelerated the pace of life, giving kids easy
access to influences that may or may not be
parent-approved. Sex, violence and foul language that
used to be relegated to late-night viewing and R-rated
movies are expected fixtures in everyday TV.
And many tweens model what they see, including common
plot lines "where the kids are really running the
house, not the dysfunctional parents," says Plante,
who in addition to being Zach's dad is a psychology
professor at Santa Clara University in California's
Silicon Valley.
He sees the results of all these factors in his
private practice frequently.
Kids look and dress older. They struggle to process
the images of sex, violence and adult humor, even when
their parents try to shield them. And sometimes, he
says, parents end up encouraging the behavior by
failing to set limits — in essence, handing over power
to their kids.
"You get this kind of perfect storm of variables that
would suggest that, yes, kids are becoming teens at an
earlier age," Plante says.
Natalie Wickstrom, a 10-year-old in suburban Atlanta,
says girls her age sometimes wear clothes that are "a
little inappropriate." She describes how one friend
tied her shirt to show her stomach and "liked to
dance, like in rap videos."
Girls in her class also talk about not only liking but
"having relationships" with boys.
"There's no rules, no limitations to what they can
do," says Natalie, who's also in fifth grade.
Her mom, Billie Wickstrom, says the teen-like behavior
of her daughter's peers, influences her daughter — as
does parents' willingness to allow it.
"Some parents make it hard on those of us who are
trying to hold their kids back a bit," she says.
So far, she and her husband have resisted letting
Natalie get her ears pierced, something many of her
friends have already done. Now Natalie is lobbying
hard for a cell phone and also wants an iPod.
"Sometimes I just think that maybe, if I got one of
these things, I could talk about what they talk
about," Natalie says of the kids she deems the
"popular ones."
It's an age-old issue. Kids want to fit in — and
younger kids want to be like older kids.
But as the limits have been pushed, experts say the
stakes also have gotten higher — with parents and
tweens having to deal with very grown-up issues such
as pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
Earlier this year, that point hit home when federal
officials recommended a vaccine for HPV — a common STD
that can lead to cervical cancer — for girls as young
as age 9.
"Physically, they're adults, but cognitively, they're
children," says Alderman, the physician in New York.
She's found that cultural influences have affected her
own children, too.
Mom, what is promiscuous?
Earlier this year, her 12-year-old son heard the
popular pop song "Promiscuous" and asked her what the
word meant.
"I mean, it's OK to have that conversation, but when
it's constantly playing, it normalizes it," Alderman
says.
She observes that parents sometimes gravitate to one
of two ill-advised extremes — they're either horrified
by such questions from their kids, or they "revel" in
the teen-like behavior. As an example of the latter
reaction, she notes how some parents think it's cute
when their daughters wear pants or shorts with words
such as "hottie" on the back.
"Believe me, I'm a very open-minded person. But it
promotes a certain way of thinking about girls and
their back sides," Alderman says. "A 12-year-old isn't
sexy."
With grown-up influences coming from so many different
angles — from peers to the Internet and TV — some
parents say the trend is difficult to combat.
Claire Unterseher, a mother in Chicago, says she only
allows her children — including an 8-year-old son and
7-year-old daughter — to watch public television.
And yet, already, they're coming home from school
asking to download songs she considers more
appropriate for teens.
"I think I bought my first Abba single when I was 13
or 14 — and here my 7-year-old wants me to download
Kelly Clarkson all the time," Unterseher says. "Why
are they so interested in all this adult stuff?"
Part of it, experts say, is marketing — and tweens are
much-sought-after consumers.
Advertisers have found that, increasingly, children
and teens are influencing the buying decisions in
their households — from cars to computers and family
vacations. According to 360 Youth, an umbrella
organization for various youth marketing groups,
tweens represent $51 billion worth of annual spending
power on their own from gifts and allowance, and also
have a great deal of say about the additional $170
billion spent directly on them each year.
Toymakers also have picked up on tweens' interest in
older themes and developed toy lines to meet the
demand — from dolls known as Bratz to video games with
more violence.
Diane Levin, a professor of human development and
early childhood at Wheelock College in Boston, is
among those who've taken aim at toys deemed too
violent or sexual.
"We've crossed a line. We can no longer avoid it —
it's just so in our face," says Levin, author of the
upcoming book "So Sexy So Soon: The Sexualization of
Childhood."
Earlier this year, she and others from a group known
as the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood
successfully pressured toy maker Hasbro to drop plans
for a line of children's toys modeled after the
singing group Pussycat Dolls.
Other parents, including Clyde Otis III, are trying
their own methods.
An attorney with a background in music publishing,
Otis has compiled a line of CDs called "Music Talking"
that includes classic oldies he believes are
interesting to tweens, but age appropriate. Artists
include Aretha Franklin, Rose Royce and Blessid Union
of Souls.
"I don't want to be like a prude. But some of the
stuff out there, it's just out of control sometimes,"
says Otis, a father of three from Maplewood, N.J.
"Beyonce singing about bouncing her butt all over the
place is a little much — at least for an 8-year-old."
In the end, many parents find it tricky to strike a
balance between setting limits and allowing their kids
to be more independent.
Plante, in California, discovered that a few weeks ago
when he and Zach rode bikes to school, as the two of
them have done since the first day of kindergarten.
From moment to moment
"You know, dad, you don't have to bike to school with
me anymore," Zach said.
Plante was taken aback.
"It was a poignant moment," he says. "There was this
notion of being embarrassed of having parents be too
close."
Since then, Zach has been riding by himself — a big
step in his dad's mind.
"Of course, it is hard to let go, but we all need to
do so in various ways over time," Plante says, "as
long as we do it thoughtfully and lovingly, I
suppose."

Last night, I watched an episode of Nip/Tuck on AXN. Not my regular fare though as I am only bought over by the critical thought-provoking SCI series. And of course, Moonlighting and Ally McBeal, more so because of the protagonists, but you don't want to know.
So beside the main story line about an ageing lady, after some seven jobs, wanting one last "job" done on her ugly looking knee "so that I can still flaunt my mini-shorts...", also on seeing reluctance on the doctors' part, pleaded to the surgeons that "I'm doing it for my daughter -- she's dying of cancer."
The side-story was one of the specialist doctors, happily married, returning one evening to be faced with the wife their eight-year-old in the bbath-room holding out a blood-stained underwear.
And pre-maturely, the couple had to initiate their baby" into the arrival at "puberty" ceremony where the eight-year-old given the title of "Princess" was crowned. A li'l like what bachelors do at a stage party before the wedding night.

DEsi thinks after the recent happenings involving many of the local municiapal councils antics and initiatives, NegaraKU can save lots of taxpapyers money by disbanding ALL THE COUNCILS except for the one in Furong*, as there are enough experienced civil servants who will ensure the government machinery functions on AUTO-PILOT like how the airpplane pilots leave the craft on AUTO as they adjourn to the JOhns to do "unofficial" business.
Which brings me to a current development from the Other end of the world. From the Western front,

Tweens' are fast becoming the new teens

Zach Plante is close with his parents — he plays
baseball with them and, on weekends, helps with work
in the small vineyard they keep at their northern
California home.
Lately, though, his parents have begun to notice
subtle changes in their son. Among other things, he's
announced that he wants to grow his hair longer — and
sometimes greets his father with "Yo, Dad!"
"Little comments will come out of his mouth that have
a bit of that teen swagger," says Tom Plante, Zach's
dad.
Thing is, Zach isn't a teen. He's 10 years old — one
part, a fun-loving fifth-grader who likes to watch the
Animal Planet network and play with his dog and pet
gecko, the other a soon-to-be middle schooler who
wants an iPod.
In some ways, it's simply part of a kid's natural
journey toward independence. But child development
experts say that physical and behavioral changes that
would have been typical of teenagers decades ago are
now common among "tweens" — kids ages 8 to 12.
Some of them are going on "dates" and talking on their
own cell phones. They listen to sexually charged pop
music, play mature-rated video games and spend time
gossiping on MySpace. And more girls are wearing
makeup and clothing that some consider beyond their
years.
Zach is starting to notice it in his friends, too,
especially the way they treat their parents.
"A lot of kids can sometimes be annoyed by their
parents," he says. "If I'm playing with them at one of
their houses, then they kind of ignore their parents.
If their parents do them a favor, they might just say,
'OK,' but not notice that much."
The shift that's turning tweens into the new teens is
complex — and worrisome to parents and some
professionals who deal with children. They wonder if
kids are equipped to handle the thorny issues that
come with the adolescent world.
"I'm sure this isn't the first time in history people
have been talking about it. But I definitely feel like
these kids are growing up faster — and I'm not sure
it's always a good thing," says Dr. Liz Alderman, an
adolescent medicine specialist at Montefiore Medical
Center in New York City. She's been in practice for 16
years and has noticed a gradual but undeniable change
in attitude in that time.
She and others who study and treat children say the
reasons it's happening are both physical and social.
Bodies developing faster, studies show
Several published studies have found, for instance,
that some tweens' bodies are developing faster, with
more girls starting menstruation in elementary school
— a result doctors often attribute to improved
nutrition and, in some cases, obesity. While boys are
still being studied, the findings about girls have
caused some endocrinologists to lower the limits of
early breast development to first or second grade.
Along with that, even young children are having to
deal with peer pressure and other societal influences.
Beyond the drugs, sex and rock'n'roll their boomer and
Gen X parents navigated, technology and consumerism
have accelerated the pace of life, giving kids easy
access to influences that may or may not be
parent-approved. Sex, violence and foul language that
used to be relegated to late-night viewing and R-rated
movies are expected fixtures in everyday TV.
And many tweens model what they see, including common
plot lines "where the kids are really running the
house, not the dysfunctional parents," says Plante,
who in addition to being Zach's dad is a psychology
professor at Santa Clara University in California's
Silicon Valley.
He sees the results of all these factors in his
private practice frequently.
Kids look and dress older. They struggle to process
the images of sex, violence and adult humor, even when
their parents try to shield them. And sometimes, he
says, parents end up encouraging the behavior by
failing to set limits — in essence, handing over power
to their kids.
"You get this kind of perfect storm of variables that
would suggest that, yes, kids are becoming teens at an
earlier age," Plante says.
Natalie Wickstrom, a 10-year-old in suburban Atlanta,
says girls her age sometimes wear clothes that are "a
little inappropriate." She describes how one friend
tied her shirt to show her stomach and "liked to
dance, like in rap videos."
Girls in her class also talk about not only liking but
"having relationships" with boys.
"There's no rules, no limitations to what they can
do," says Natalie, who's also in fifth grade.
Her mom, Billie Wickstrom, says the teen-like behavior
of her daughter's peers, influences her daughter — as
does parents' willingness to allow it.
"Some parents make it hard on those of us who are
trying to hold their kids back a bit," she says.
So far, she and her husband have resisted letting
Natalie get her ears pierced, something many of her
friends have already done. Now Natalie is lobbying
hard for a cell phone and also wants an iPod.
"Sometimes I just think that maybe, if I got one of
these things, I could talk about what they talk
about," Natalie says of the kids she deems the
"popular ones."
It's an age-old issue. Kids want to fit in — and
younger kids want to be like older kids.
But as the limits have been pushed, experts say the
stakes also have gotten higher — with parents and
tweens having to deal with very grown-up issues such
as pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
Earlier this year, that point hit home when federal
officials recommended a vaccine for HPV — a common STD
that can lead to cervical cancer — for girls as young
as age 9.
"Physically, they're adults, but cognitively, they're
children," says Alderman, the physician in New York.
She's found that cultural influences have affected her
own children, too.
Mom, what is promiscuous?
Earlier this year, her 12-year-old son heard the
popular pop song "Promiscuous" and asked her what the
word meant.
"I mean, it's OK to have that conversation, but when
it's constantly playing, it normalizes it," Alderman
says.
She observes that parents sometimes gravitate to one
of two ill-advised extremes — they're either horrified
by such questions from their kids, or they "revel" in
the teen-like behavior. As an example of the latter
reaction, she notes how some parents think it's cute
when their daughters wear pants or shorts with words
such as "hottie" on the back.
"Believe me, I'm a very open-minded person. But it
promotes a certain way of thinking about girls and
their back sides," Alderman says. "A 12-year-old isn't
sexy."
With grown-up influences coming from so many different
angles — from peers to the Internet and TV — some
parents say the trend is difficult to combat.
Claire Unterseher, a mother in Chicago, says she only
allows her children — including an 8-year-old son and
7-year-old daughter — to watch public television.
And yet, already, they're coming home from school
asking to download songs she considers more
appropriate for teens.
"I think I bought my first Abba single when I was 13
or 14 — and here my 7-year-old wants me to download
Kelly Clarkson all the time," Unterseher says. "Why
are they so interested in all this adult stuff?"
Part of it, experts say, is marketing — and tweens are
much-sought-after consumers.
Advertisers have found that, increasingly, children
and teens are influencing the buying decisions in
their households — from cars to computers and family
vacations. According to 360 Youth, an umbrella
organization for various youth marketing groups,
tweens represent $51 billion worth of annual spending
power on their own from gifts and allowance, and also
have a great deal of say about the additional $170
billion spent directly on them each year.
Toymakers also have picked up on tweens' interest in
older themes and developed toy lines to meet the
demand — from dolls known as Bratz to video games with
more violence.
Diane Levin, a professor of human development and
early childhood at Wheelock College in Boston, is
among those who've taken aim at toys deemed too
violent or sexual.
"We've crossed a line. We can no longer avoid it —
it's just so in our face," says Levin, author of the
upcoming book "So Sexy So Soon: The Sexualization of
Childhood."
Earlier this year, she and others from a group known
as the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood
successfully pressured toy maker Hasbro to drop plans
for a line of children's toys modeled after the
singing group Pussycat Dolls.
Other parents, including Clyde Otis III, are trying
their own methods.
An attorney with a background in music publishing,
Otis has compiled a line of CDs called "Music Talking"
that includes classic oldies he believes are
interesting to tweens, but age appropriate. Artists
include Aretha Franklin, Rose Royce and Blessid Union
of Souls.
"I don't want to be like a prude. But some of the
stuff out there, it's just out of control sometimes,"
says Otis, a father of three from Maplewood, N.J.
"Beyonce singing about bouncing her butt all over the
place is a little much — at least for an 8-year-old."
In the end, many parents find it tricky to strike a
balance between setting limits and allowing their kids
to be more independent.
Plante, in California, discovered that a few weeks ago
when he and Zach rode bikes to school, as the two of
them have done since the first day of kindergarten.
From moment to moment
"You know, dad, you don't have to bike to school with
me anymore," Zach said.
Plante was taken aback.
"It was a poignant moment," he says. "There was this
notion of being embarrassed of having parents be too
close."
Since then, Zach has been riding by himself — a big
step in his dad's mind.
"Of course, it is hard to let go, but we all need to
do so in various ways over time," Plante says, "as
long as we do it thoughtfully and lovingly, I
suppose."

Last night, I watched an episode of Nip/Tuck on AXN. Not my regular fare though as I am only bought over by the critical thought-provoking SCI series. And of course, Moonlighting and Ally McBeal, more so because of the protagonists, but you don't want to know.
So beside the main story line about an ageing lady, after some seven jobs, wanting one last "job" done on her ugly looking knee "so that I can still flaunt my mini-shorts...", also on seeing reluctance on the doctors' part, pleaded to the surgeons that "I'm doing it for my daughter -- she's dying of cancer."
The side-story was one of the specialist doctors, happily married, returning one evening to be faced with the wife their eight-year-old in the bbath-room holding out a blood-stained underwear.
And pre-maturely, the couple had to initiate their baby" into the arrival at "puberty" ceremony where the eight-year-old given the title of "Princess" was crowned. A li'l like what bachelors do at a stage party before the wedding night.

Of poisons in the air
Death by suicide-cum-murder is the ultimate tragedy.
In a land of RM20milion weddings, and instant creation of millionaires , yet for a section of depressed Malaysians, often caught in a tight financial corner, seemingly Death is becoming a welcome relief to many bespeaks that the Malaysian atmosphere is somewhat "poisoned".
On the one-hand, there are some -- or is it many? Desi's poor at advanced mathematics! -- lucky millionaires who gain several rounds of 15-minute media fame by flaunting their wealth with birthday dos and second weddings. One wonders sometimes if their riches often were not "properly" gotten but channelled via rentals because maybe they possess APs, or they are sons or daughters, or bitches, do I care?, of BIG shots driving a string of imported cars in town as they are privileged citizens. ("Prvileged" here is undefined because I don't wish to insult my ER on a blue Monday that's heralding a festive season's arrival with most of us quite unprepared this year to welcome the new year.) Young upstarts with UMNO- and MCA-connections (did I hear Gerekan and MIC...?) preach to their disciples about the easy path to riches and the air is electrified with high expectatons -- and poisons.
On the other-hand, small businessmen and hawkers become Desperadoes and earn one round of 15-minute media fame/infamy by poisoning their young ones and then turn the daggers on theemselves. Worse off, they survive to re-live the tragedy, again, and again, until the next attempt at suicide to end it all. Yes, the familiar term of Ah Long rings a belle, and excitable politicians and other authorities and concerned welfare officers expressed a new determination to cut the scourge at its source. The record is then stored away for another re-run on the next strike.
Pray that the next strike does not happen to some-one close, like a elative or an immediate neighbour. Perhaps, even the children's "poorer" classmates often absent from school because they did not even have 50sen for bus-fate. While yours could have up to RM50 a day if only they wish to. Even a handphone to go along...
I weep for Malaysia. Ooops, Sabrina reminds we have long wept for NegaraKu -- now the tears have run dry.
I feel it in the air -- many "things" are not right in my country. You can't pin "the things" down to specifics -- mayhaps it's a collission of many forces or bundles of "negative energies". Each individual citizen must ask of himself/herself, to my mind, at the personal level:
AM I CONTRIBUTING TO THIS RISING OF THE DARK FORCES OR NEGATIVE VIBRATIONS?
Or,
WE maintain our sanity and humanity
and do our little morsel of good

WONG Yuen Khye, 65, cut a forlorn figure as she arrived at Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Cheras to claim the bodies of her grandsons yesterday.
Through what must have been a heart-breaking experience, the paternal grandmother of the three brothers poisoned to death by their tour guide father, Seah Wong Chong, was alone.
At 11am, she walked into HUKM mortuary, carrying plastic bags filled with the boys’ clothes and toys to be put into the caskets of Siew Cheung, 12, Siew Man, 10, and eight-year-old Siew Tong. Several family members of Seah’s wife, Kau Mei Lin, accompanied her.
All Wong asked from Kau’s family was that they remained at the mortuary until the bodies were claimed, but they refused.
The said they were too ‘shy’ to face the reporters and photographers present. Irritated, Wong chided them.
“All I ask is that you help me out here. This is my last request, I won’t come begging to you for help anymore,” said Wong.
Unaffected by Wong’s pleas, Kau’s family members spent about 10 minutes helping her sort out the boys’ clothing and left soon after.

KUALA LUMPUR: Seah Wong Chong does not regret killing his three sons with rat poison on Friday.
Neither is he remorseful over the suicide attempt by him and his wife, Kau Mei Lin, immediately after the children passed out.
The 38-year-old tour bus driver said he and and his wife were forced to take the drastic measure after encountering problems, including those involving finance and debts with Ah Long.
"I gave my children poison until they became unconscious. I was forced to take this action as other family members could not help me resolve my problems," he told a reporter from a Chinese daily at the Hospital University Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM).
Wong Chong claimed he had only borrowed several thousand ringgit from an Ah Long and not RM150,000 as had been reported.

KUALA LUMPUR: Seah Wong Chong does not regret killing his three sons with rat poison on Friday.
Neither is he remorseful over the suicide attempt by him and his wife, Kau Mei Lin, immediately after the children passed out.
The 38-year-old tour bus driver said he and and his wife were forced to take the drastic measure after encountering problems, including those involving finance and debts with Ah Long.
"I gave my children poison until they became unconscious. I was forced to take this action as other family members could not help me resolve my problems," he told a reporter from a Chinese daily at the Hospital University Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM).
Wong Chong claimed he had only borrowed several thousand ringgit from an Ah Long and not RM150,000 as had been reported.
