Man-in-the-Street (MITS) column: reflections

I found one of myGOoDfriends Down Under engaging in REFLECTIONS, which is GOoD as humans being need to once in a which to pause, think of the past, and maybe become wiser by learning a few lessons from fromer events, especially the biting ones.Of course we put a psring to our feet recallin those HAPPY TIMES too, for balance in life must naturally occur wo that sanity prevails.The Almighty, however you preceive Him to be, will never let any human being suffer only down times. There will always be the sun rise after the sun sets. Otherwise, it'sunnatural. So long as vvee linger on Mother Good Earth, our heart will be lifted up every down it's weighted down.

So to sweets from Ozland, here's a LIFTER!:)

(Chorus:)
When it's Springtime in the rockies,
I'll be coming back to you;
Little sweetheart of the mountains,
With your bonnie eyes of blue;
Once again I'll say I love you,
While the birds sing all the day.
When it's Springtime in the rockies,
In the rockies far away.

The twilight shadows deepen into night dear,
The city lights are gleaming o'er the snow;
I sit alone beside the cheery fireside;
I'm dreaming dreams from out the long ago;
I fancy it is Springtime in the rockies,
The flowers with their colors are aflame;
And though I long to be back in the rockies,
I'll wait until the Springtime comes again.

(Repeat Chorus)

When it's Springtime in the rockies,

DESIDERATA c'untinues:

Do our Malaysian leaders even give a damn as to what's hitting the average man--in-the-street?

"NO!" is Desi's conclusion. Most times, they live in denial. They bury their heads in the sand. Like ostriches Down Under.

The PM heads for the exit, with his tail behind his two front legs, promising REFORMS after five years, still at the 1,500metres starting block, when he should be sprinting the last 100metres!
The DPM waits like a wolf, ready to pounce to get his next victim -- the 'hole c'untry. Especially powerfool as FM. Wait till the Ides of March 2009. Desi thinks NegaraKu will head Zimbabwe way if DS Anwar Ibrahim doesn't deliver his Merdeka Mission 916 by then. (Let's pray very hard for RPK plus 63 other ISA detainess that a new PR government takes over soon -- their very lives depend on it!) Failure would leave us with just one option -- Turn skyward and pray that God would keep Malaysia "protected" against all these ostriches and wolves.

Rudd warns of tough times ahead
Government to guarantee bank deposits
Trading: Market tipped to open flat

KEVIN RUDD steeled Australians for the effects of the global financial meltdown but said the Government was working to "maintain positive growth".

"Some of the options could be bringing forward major infrastructure projects or one-off measures to help small business set to suffer," the Prime Minister said yesterday.

Investors will nervously watch the opening of the Australian share market this morning after the International Monetary Fund yesterday made dire predictions about almost zero growth for many major world economies.

Local shares are tipped to open flat, although Commsec economist Craig James said predicting the share market at the moment was "like predicting horse racing".

The news came as Europe agreed on a bank rescue plan, which would guarantee medium-term loans between banks, and also take steps to recapitalise and if necessary restructure failed banks.

Jobs market to tighten

Economist Shane Oliver of AMP Capital predicted that, as the world chaos hit Australia, the jobless rate could blow out to 6 per cent by June.

"The big worry for Australians is rising unemployment, people cut back on spending and there is a risk to the housing market," he said.

Last week there was carnage on financial markets and last Friday the share market fell 8 per cent, losing $90 billion in value.

"This global financial crisis has entered a new and dangerous phase with real consequences for growth, for jobs and therefore for the future," Mr Rudd said.

In a pre-emptive strike, Mr Rudd unveiled a three-pronged attack to secure the Australian banking sector.

Under the plan, all deposits with banks, building societies and credit unions will be guaranteed no matter how much they hold.

"The Australian government will guarantee all deposits whatever their size in all Australian banking institutions for three years," Mr Rudd said.

An extra $4 billion will be injected into the mortgage market in a move to help non-deposit lenders to survive and prop up property prices.

Mr Rudd insisted that move was not a sign of desperation but a response to moves by foreign governments that left Australia at a disadvantage.

Opposition support

In a rare show of bi-partisanship, Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull backed the move on bank accounts saying the Coalition would support the legislation.

Speaking from Washington where he attended crisis talks, Treasurer Wayne Swan yesterday said the Government expected to meet all its election promises but would review its spending commitments as the global financial crisis enters a "new damaging phase" and impacts on Australia's growth.

Mr Swan yesterday attended an emergency meeting of the Group of 20 finance ministers including Australia, China and India - as well as a meeting of the IMF.

Systemic meltdown

IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn gave a grim warning: "intensifying solvency concerns about a number of the largest US-based and European financial institutions have pushed the global financial system to the brink of systemic meltdown".

Mr Swan has also vowed to name and shame banks that fail to pass on the full amount of last week's interest rate cut as soon as the current world financial turmoil eases.

Mr Swan said while he did not have any mechanism to force banks to pass on the cut, he would pressure banks to do the right thing.

PR to call for review of Budget 2009
Husna Yusop

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 12, 2008): Pakatan Rakyat (PR) MPs will call for a review of Budget 2009 in the Dewan Rakyat tomorrow, now that the government has a new Finance Minister in Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he will talk on the current global economic crisis and the danger of its impact to this country because "Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders are still in denial of this fact".

"One of the first things is to review the budget proposals and figures. Most countries have done that, including Singapore. We need to do that as an urgent matter ... We can’t work on obsolete figures that are unrealistic nor reflect economic fundamentals," he said.

Speaking to reporters at his Aidilfitri Open House in Sultan Sulaiman Club in Kg Baru here today, Anwar said if leaders were not alert towards the people's problem and country's economy, "it is the beginning of a disaster to the country". (The Budget was tabled on Aug 29.)

Anwar said he works on the basis of respect for the Constitution as well as the legal and parliamentary processes.

"Of course we have to accept the possibility of a change by a vote of no-confidence or by an MP's refusal to support the government," he said, citing the case of former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.

"He (Zaid) resigned on a matter of principle against the Internal Security Act (ISA). What if he then decides to join Pakatan? Is that unlawful, unconstitutional or unethical? It is a matter of principle. He no longer can condone such flagrant abuse of power.

On a related matter, Anwar said he did not give a new date for the transition of power as reported by some today, quoting Dec 8 as the new date of takeover by the PR government.

"I did not give a date about the transition of power. I said we will continue taking the necessary measures and when the time is right, we will see the change. If the MPs and people wanted change, nobody can stop it.

"That is why I don’t bother much about the criticisms coming from Umno leaders. They have said it many times before. They said it was impossible for us to win on March 8, in the Permatang Pauh by-election. But we have proven that people wanted change."

Some 20,000 people attended Anwar open house from 2pm to 5pm. Also present were a group of Hindraf members who presented a teddy bear and Hari Raya card to Anwar.

Apart from Anwar, his wife Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and daughter Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah, other PKR leaders present were Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, R. Sivarasa and Tian Chua.

Also present were PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and deputy Nasharuddin Mat Isa who came for a while in the afternoon.

Earlier from 10am to noon, it was open to the VIPs and media editors. Among those present were Zaid and DAP leaders including Lim Kit Siang.
