Black Eye to the Media

This a a Dark Day for Justice. Today we learn of the heavy price
some messengers pay to bring you -- EsteemedReaders -- the Story.
No doubt sometimes Messengers Make Mistakes, they are human too.
But losing one's job, and pants, for an "honest mistake"?
They indeed shoot the messenger, don't they?
ONE SALUTE to each of the two Top Guns at the China Press
for sticking to principles, and their gun, in carrying out their duties.
May the nation's force grounded on love and justice be be them always.
Meanhwhile, a worse performer who is a deputy minister who had advised foreign visitors to Malaysia that:
If you don't like it here in Malaysia, get lost!, hangs around to:
Eat, Drink and Be Merry?

May the GOoD Lord watch over Chong Choong Nam and Ng Siew Peng. With their comrades standing behind them, the Malaysian Fourth Estate may yet live and progress with honour and dignity.

Two editors resign
over ear-squat story

PETALING JAYA: Two China Press senior editors have resigned
from the newspaper to take reponsibility for a report
wrongly identifying the woman in the nude ear-squat video
as a Chinese national.
The paper's evening edition yesterday announced the resignations of evening
edition editor-in-chief Chong Choong Nam and executive editor-in-chief Ng
Siew Peng.
It said that Chong and Ng resigned with immediate effect to take full
responsibility of "a glaring mistake in the report".
In the notice, the daily, published by MCA-owned Nanyang Press Holdings
Group, also apologised to the public and the parties concerned for cuasing misunderstanding and inconvenience.
Yesterday, theSun reported that Chong has been redesignated as personal
assistant to Nanyang Group chairman Tan Sri Wongh See Wah and Ng as
special projects manager.

Reacting to reports of the editors' redesignation, Penang-based Charter 2000-
Aliran
joint coordinators Dr Mustaffa K. Anuar and Anil Netto said
"the outlook for media freedom does not look bright with the two editors being turned into sacrificial lamb".
Among the factors which influenced the move was the Printing Presses and
Publications Act 1984, they said.
"We can now expect the media to exercise more self-censorship and rein
in independent-minded journalists and editors," they said in a statement.
Mustaffa and Anil said the ethnicity of the woman in the video clip
on which the report was based is not the real issue.
"The real issue is the dignity of the woman ... the victim - irrespective of
whether she is Malay, Chinese, or any other ethnic origin -- as she is a human being," they said.

DESIDERATA:
Our Country pronounces it wishes to join the ranks of Developed Nations by 2020.
Meanwhile, state CMs and MBs who clearly had plundered the state's resources,
Corporates who lost billions in their adventures using national flagships have been "bailed out" by the billions, and
Youth leaders who promote Eat, Drink and Be Merry culture as well as Becoming Instant Millionaires at the ripe, old age of 30,
they are roaming free to enjoy the country's spoils and largesse.
I don't know whther to laugh or cry any more.

Desi,
How's with your setting up of Spiritedestination or whatever Utopia you once thought of sometime ago? Can you reserve a place for me and make me Chief of Research. I want to research more on this cinnamon thingy.
Cheers, Howsy.

Hi Desi:

If the authority cannot determine the ethnicity of the woman in the video immediately at that point in time, needing a commission of inquiry, how can they then expect 2 journalists to be "absolutely" accurate in their report? Bearing in mind, at that point in time, there was a police report filed by the few Chinese nationals about their inhumane treatment in the hands of the police - so any human being would naturally jump to that ethnic conclusion in the video.

From an outsider point of view, this "show cause" is to kill two birds with one stone: to divert attention away from the real despicable act committed by the police; and to act as deterrent to "unfriendly" journalists who could draw public attention and ire towards those public servants who don't practise according to the book.

Hopefully, the newspaper concerned will be even more respected by readers at large, after having two journalists "martyred". Heaven is always just and fair.

Hi Howsy:

How are things in 2006? Nice to run into you again.

Peace.
