Big hurrah for govt cost-cutting measures

KUALA LUMPUR: There's all round applause for the government's cost-cutting measures to combat rising costs.

Many said the move was timely and getting ministers to take a cut in allowances and capping their holidays abroad was a good show of leadership by example.

However, state governments led by the opposition said the measures were a reflection of what they had been doing since they assumed office.

The government's main financial watchdog, the Public Accounts Committee, welcomed the move.

Deputy committee chairman Dr Tan Seng Giaw said: "If it can save money, it is a step in the right direction. I would recommend more cost-cutting measures for government departments. Let us see how these measures work."

Consumers Association of Penang president S.M. Mohamed Idris said the government showed it was sensitive to the public.

"We would like to see more cutbacks. Many official government vehicles have engines above 2000cc. Maybe something can be done about this."

Mohamed Idris said the government must also reduce the use of vehicles.

He said the government should curtail the travel of government servants.

Federation of Malaysia Consumer Associations communications director Mohamed Yusof Abdul Rahman welcomed the cost-cutting measures but wanted to see an improvement in public transport.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng commended the government but said the Penang government had put in place cost-saving measures.

"We have been holding functions on government premises. This helps caterers. The government should consider giving more money to those earning less than RM6,000 a month."
