Post BN's return to govern Putrajaya for another five-year term, I still read the English media -- both PRINT and ONLINE -- almost daily unlesss cerain days caught Desi poor as the churchmouse not affording even that 30sen for theSUN, and I had to run after that bus providing free Internet access beacuse my home line was just disconnected. Okay, writers aligned to Reformasi are prone to exaggerating a byte...you can take it wit' a pinch of salt eh!? That ? mark -- you no need to answer OK, it's what is termed RHETORICAL question. Hey, if you no understand what rhetoric means, try googling dictionary.com, cun? I ain'y no slave of yours, Maosit or Demokrazy!


Anyway, thanks for bearing with Desi's DIgRESS -- I won't resort to AGGRESSION as long you remain ESTEEMED in my I=I -- and if you should spot TYPOS and sperring miss takes, blame it on one month's rustinurse! If you still complain about me gifting lame excuses, brudder, siadar, get the here out of Hell!

Okay, back to the topic -- MY REASONS FOR FAIGUE afrer 505, 2013.  1. It's the same antics by the BN animals callling themselves wakil rakyat at Parlaiment, and BN=controlled State Assemblies. Yes, I'm a PRO-Pakatan Rakyat (being a PKR member of cabang Seremban which means STONES,you know dat?) blogger, and I offer no apologies to PM Najib and his gaggle of clowns.

For starters, jest name the one act that maketh Malaysia the laughing stock in the www -- for the whole wide world or worldwide web:) Some Singaporeans would assert its astands for THE WILD, WILD WEST, and does Desi protest?

WAN ACT: After one "sheepish" court decreed that the word "Allah" is exclusive to use by the Muslims, the UMNO herd said it does not apply to Sabahans and Sarawakians. This confuses --cuntfuse is aMore likely! since they are famous for speaking from their a'seholes -- HEY, DOES THAT MEAN SABAH/SARAWAK are NOT part of a nation called MALYSIA? EVEN THE UNITED NATIONS DEEMED IT FIT TO PRONOUNCE THAT THE WORD "ALLAH" IS "NOT" EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY TO ANY COUNTRY OR RACE!

Hey, that momentous event in 1967 when a country named Singapore -- who joined the Union alongside with Sabah and Sarawak -- could be unceremoniously KICKED OUT of the nation called Malaysia. Desi has suffered post-GE13 fatigue and following Home minister Zahid Hamidi's advice, and I was one of those Malaysians who don't like the electoral system here, so I migrated. To HIBER-nation. desiderata -- the ORIGINAL!

The poem by Max Ehrmann was written in 1927, but often unsuspecting readers have come across an attribution that the poem was "found in St. Paul's Church in 1692"!

I first became acquianted with this poem that opens with "Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence," in my secondary schooldays, and I became besotted with Max Ehrmann (. School children might have been introduced to poets like Robert Frost (The Road Not Taken), Emily Dickinson (Hope Is the Thing with Feathers), and of course, the compulsory reading for students of English literature, William Shakespeare; but Max who? would by on the lips of many, what more correctly guess the meaning of Desiderata. But to many of the activists demonstrating against the Vietnam War in the 1960s, this poem was adopted as some sort of their anthem, especially with the hippie generation generally referred to as the flower children.

In "The Desiderata of Happiness", editor Robert L. Bell rote that Max Ehrmann was 'surely one of the greatest spokesmen of the twentieth century'. Deeply concerned with social problems, he was a friend of Eugene Debs, the pioneer union founder in America, whose championing of the underdog struck a responsive chord in Ehrmann who deplored the exploitation of labour in his early twentieth century life. His poem America -- 1910 reflects this period, andComplacent Women, written in 1918, is as relevant today as it was then. (Is there within your soul no pride of life/ No whispered music, and no star of hope/ That you have no desire for human rights?)

Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, and graduated from De Pauw University, and going on to postgraduate studies in law and philiosophy at Harvard University, Ehrmann first practised law, and then joined the family business of meat-packing. He gave the family business up to devote his life to writing. Contemporaries told of him lying in the grass contemplating the sky -- an early "flower child", Bell wrote.

To me, the central attraction in Ehrmann's poetry is that he used very simple words, and yet the message makes a strong connection with the reader, touching the heart, the soul, and exercises the mind, as best exemplified by now-famousDesiderata, which follows:


GO placidly amid the noise and the haste, and
remember what peace there may be in silence. *
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good
terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and
clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull 
and ignorant; they too have their story. * Avoid loud
aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the

Ho Kay Tat: Bring back English medium to fix our schools

'WE HAVE spent billions on education, but have fallen very short in producing internationally competitive students and bringing young Malaysians of various races together.

That was my take from reading the three-quarter-inch-thick Education Blueprint report. The two main highlights were:

>> We have spent more on education than most countries but the quality of our students, according to two international benchmarks, is ranked in the bottom half and below that of countries that have spent less or the same as us.
>> The school system has not fostered unity among young Malaysians of various races as well as we had hoped for, and in fact, one race makes up 97% of the enrolment in our national primary schools while the others opt for vernacular schools.

Low quality education

"Malaysia's consistently high levels of expenditure on education have resulted in almost universal access to primary education. However, there remains room for improvement on the dimensions of quality," the report says.

Room for improvement is an understatement if you look at some of key findings of the report...'

"Restore English-medium schools

If we can give parents the option of sending their children to Malay, Chinese or Tamil medium primary schools, why can't we offer them a fourth option of English medium schools?  Doing so will not deprive those who want their children to learn in their mother tongue, so the champions of vernacular schools need not complain.

Restoring English-medium schools, even if only at primary school level, will help the country build a reasonably big pool of young Malaysians with a good command of the language - a vital economic asset to the country.

On top of that, these schools will bring together young Malaysians from all races and socio-economic classes who, through studying and playing together, can become the unifying force we need to build a Malaysia that is one.

That is what we had in the Sixties and Seventies. It is time to bring it back. Start with 30 to 40 schools across the country and increase the number as teaching resources improve and according to demand. Citing a lack of resources for not doing it is a lame excuse."

Just imagine: Malay makes up 97% of the enrolment in our national primary schools; while Chinese enrolment in SJKC increased from 92% in 2010 to 96% in 2011. In other words, only 4% of Chinese enrolled in national primary schools.

Ho's suggestion seems very practical and pragmatic to most Malaysians who are not linked to Umno. It is not that our leaders do not know the solution but are unwilling to lose their support base which they had cultivated over half a century. To turn back the clock and admit they made a big mistake in education is almost an impossibility to expect from an Umno riding high on race and religion. Their current excuse is that it may cause instability. Perhaps, by approving more private English schools and with more private funds donated by like-minded philantropists might increase the number of affordable places in such schools.

A friend went to Beijing recently and was given this brochure by the hotel. It is precious. She is keeping it and reading it whenever she feels depressed... 

Obviously, it has been translated directly, word for word from Mandarin to English.

I have rarely posted sopo posts aft GE13 because There is NO INCENTIVE/MTOTIVATION. UMNO remains domineering and so predicatable -- RACIST to the innermost core of its anatomy already much smeared and smellin' like SH*T!

I like the lawyer series ALLY McBEAL because it entertains. Yes, it's now relaxing time/dime for DEsi to catch up on the movies and TV series I miss'd spending too mush ti8me on Sopo blogging -- and seemingly getting nowhere to "UBAH" the gomen in Putrajaya. Now I focus on writHing my first NOVEL which I hope can make it to the small, if knot that, BIG screen! Hope springs eternal in all people fighting for CHANGE!

Ally is wacky, the sory lines are well plotted wit WIT and HUMOUR and some lines that seem'd to come out of my DDC. (If thou knowest knot what DDC is, don't ask b4 I aRsEk you to join Zahind to get the here out of Hell! Hey, Desi is also capable of hitting the low notes on whackiNURSE, OK!

Songs from Ally McBeal is an album by Vonda Shepard released in 1998 as a soundtrack for the American television series Ally McBeal.

It reached number three in the UK album charts and was a success in the US, Canada and many European countries too. The song "Searchin' My Soul," co-written by Shepard with Paul Gordon, was used as the Ally McBeal theme tune, and an earlier version had been featured on one of Vonda Shepard's previous albums, The Radical Light. Malaysia and monotheism - The Economist

Do Christians and Muslims worship the same God? It is never hard to find to devout followers of either faith who answer that question with a resounding negative.

Evangelical Christians were dismayed when former United States president George W. Bush welcomed a group of Muslims to the White House with the words: "We see in Islam a religion that traces its origins back to God's call on Abraham. We share your belief in God's justice..."

Actually, the "same God" question is not one that a monotheist can meaningfully ask.

The question does make perfect sense for an atheist (who thinks that all gods are human constructs), for a polytheist, and indeed for a henotheist—a member of a tribe that worships one deity but accepts there may be others.

But for a logically consistent monotheist, God's "sameness" must remain supremely unaffected by the legitimacy of the worship offered by one or other group of human beings.

But that doesn't stop monotheists arguing about the question, and it can cause violence on the streets as well as common-room debates.

A fresh, unhelpful contribution came from a Malaysian appeals court which has just affirmed that non-Muslims must not use the world "Allah" when referring to God in any public context.

This is the latest twist in a saga which began in 2007 when the government banned the use of the word "Allah" — which is the usual word for God in the Malay language — by Herald, a Catholic newspaper.

It also confiscated thousands of copies of the Bible printed in Indonesia which used the word "Allah" for God.

In December 2009, the Kuala Lumpur High Court overturned that ban, and in reaction there was a wave of attacks on non-Muslim places of worship, including Christian churches and Sikh temples.

This week's decision, restoring the ban, was justified by a three-panel judge on the grounds of Islam's vulnerability to conversion efforts by other faiths.

"It is my judgment that the most possible and probable threat to Islam, in the context of this country, is the propagation of other religions to the followers of Islam," said the chief judge, who added that the use of the word Allah was "not an integral part of the faith in Christianity".

The story will not end there: Herald's editor, the Reverend Father Lawrence Andrew, has said he will appeal to the highest court.

Whatever the Malaysian judiciary ultimately decides, it will not stop Christians in the Arabic-speaking world, and in countries where Arabic influence has been strong, from calling on the name of Allah. Go into any traditional church in the Middle East and you will hear the chant: "Quddusan Allah, Quddusan al-Qawi" ("Holy God, Holy and Strong...")

That chant is said to have originated in Greek-speaking Constantinople, but the chances are that people were singing something similar in Semitic languages, of which Arabic is one, for centuries before.

In 2010, as mobs rampaged, Malaysia's opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, made a thoughtful comment on the issue. He insisted that Muslims scholars outside Malaysia found the claim to a monopoly on "Allah" absurd.

After all, "Arabic's sister Semitic languages" also used very similar words for the Deity, namely Elaha in Aramaic and Elohim in Hebrew.

"Historical manuscripts prove that Arabic-speaking Muslims, Christians and Jews have collectively prayed to God, the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe, as Allah for over 1,400 years," he wrote in the Wall Street Journal.

When it comes to calming passions on the street, arguments about monotheism may have little impact, but a bit of  broad historical perspective certainly does no harm. - The Economist, October 15, 2013.

Uncaring children may fight over your assets even when you are still alive, and wish for your early demise so they can inherit your properties and wealth.

Your children take for granted that they are rightful heirs to your wealth; but that you have no claims to their money.

50-year old like you, don't trade in your health for wealth by working yourself to an early grave anymore... Because your money may not be able to buy your health...

When to stop making money, and how much is enough (hundred thousands, million, ten million)?

Out of thousand hectares of good farm land, you can consume only three quarts (of rice) daily; out of a thousand mansions, you only need eight square meters of space to rest at night.

So, as long as you have enough food and enough money to spend, that is good enough. You should live happily. Every family has its own problems. Just do not compare with others for fame and social status and see whose children are doing better, etc., but challenge others for happiness, health, enjoyment, quality of life and longevity...

Don't worry about things that you can't change because it doesn't help and it may spoil your health.

You have to create your own well-being and find your own place of happiness. As long as you are in good mood and good health, think about happy things, do happy things daily and have fun in doing, then you will pass your time happily every day.
One day passes without happiness, you will lose one day.

UNITED NATIONS — Despite a week of daily negotiations between the United States and Russia over the planned destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons, the two sides were still deeply split on a fundamental point when Secretary of State John F. Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met last Tuesday.

The scheduled 45-minute session Tuesday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly took place in a tiny Russian meeting room at the United Nations, with an enormous portrait of President Vladimir Putin on the wall. It ran for about 90 minutes, with Kerry and Lavrov, flanked by their U.N. ambassadors and other aides, making pencil edits to a four-page draft that represents a major departure in each country’s approach to the Syrian civil war.

Russia wanted more lax ways to make sure that ally and arms client Syria complied with the agreement to give up its toxic stores; the United States wanted a toughly-worded U.N. Security Council resolution that spelled out what Syria had to do and the consequences Damascus would face for reneging.

The resolution approved unanimously by the 15-member Security Council three days later split the difference, but not before some drama that included a tense, 11 p.m. telephone call between Kerry and Lavrov.

“That was a tough conversation,” a senior State Department official said Saturday, with Kerry suggesting that their mutual goal of getting the agreement completed during the General Assembly was in peril. Several U.S. officials and other diplomats spoke on the condition of anonymity provided a look at the makings of the deal, because much of the discussion with Russian officials was confidential.

The Russian position leading up to the General Assembly meeting had stressed a lesser role for the Security Council, which the U.S. side saw as a way to water down a historic agreement to rid Syria of toxic weapons. Russia preferred to leave most responsibility for reporting on Syrian progress or the lack of it to the U.N.-affiliated Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which has no real enforcement power.

“Their approach initially was, ‘Syria voluntarily does this,’ and our whole frame was, ‘Are you kidding? This regime just gassed more than 400 children,’ ” Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Saturday.

The United States and Russia, which back opposing sides in the conflict, had reached an agreement in principle earlier this month in Geneva to put Syria’s chemical weapons stores under international control. That agreement averted imminent U.S. cruise missile strikes on Syria in protest over the poison gas massacre of more than 1,000 people on Aug. 21. Syria agreed to give up its weapons under heavy pressure from Russia.

A Security Council vote endorsing the program would be the first firm action at the world body since the Syrian war began. All previous attempts to punish or condemn Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were blocked by Russia, which, like the United States, holds a veto.

“We really did believe there was no viable path forward at the Security Council, and it was not for lack of probing,” Power said Saturday. “We couldn’t even get a press statement out of the Security Council the day of the attack condemning the use of chemical weapons. It was that blocked.”

Despite the basic agreement to act at the Security Council, negotiations were difficult, several officials close to the talks said. The framework agreed to by Kerry and Lavrov in Geneva left many things vague — chief among them the ways Syria would be held to account.

The session at the United Nations on Tuesday was a breakthrough, officials said, but did not resolve the last sticking points over language. “Things like we want a ‘shall’ and they want a ‘should,’ ” one official said.

It is such details that can make the difference between a powerful resolution and a weak one.

Translating the framework worked out by the two top diplomats on Sept. 14 into binding requirements for Syria “was not easy given the frictions we have had with the Russians on Syria,” and the challenge of the task itself, a senior Obama administration official said.

The resulting deal sets an ambitious schedule for the seizure and destruction of one of the world’s largest remaining stores of the widely banned weapons, and does so while fighting continues.

After that session Tuesday, Power met again with Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s ambassador to the U.N., and a small team of negotiators. They had made some headway by Wednesday, but Kerry was concerned that the week was slipping by, the State Department official said.

Following a late dinner, Kerry called Lavrov on Wednesday night. Lavrov did not want to have a detailed discussion, officials said, but negotiators stayed up most of the night. By the next day, Power and Churkin had a draft text, and Kerry and Lavrov agreed to meet again.

They sat together with their aides for about 45 minutes and approved the final version, then met briefly alone, one official said. The meeting ended with a warm handshake. The U.S. and Russia then finalized a critical technical agreement on arrangements and timetables for inspections and presented it to the OPCW, which had to allow a 24-hour consideration before its vote.

The OPCW, meanwhile, scheduled a vote on the technical plan at 4 p.m. Friday, providing just enough time for the Security Council to vote on its landmark resolution at 8. But Iran raised late concerns about the OPCW text, forcing a delay in the vote .

Lavrov had extended his stay to vote on the measure personally, as had British Foreign Secretary William Hague and others. Hague’s U.N. envoy, Mark Lyall Grant, posted an anxious tweet, warning that the U.N. vote might be scuttled.

The OPCW, headquartered in The Hague, voted about 6:30, and Lyall Grant tweeted, “White smoke in the Hague.”

The Security Council vote just after 8 p.m. was unanimous.
