Who else will migrate?

Not too long ago, Mahathir confessed that he would migrate...

Besides Dr M, there is someone else. Handpicked by Dr M when he was the PM, she was the FIRST CHINESE WOMAN who became the deputy finance minister...

Such betrayal.

Chinese woman, are you going to stay on and fight for the Chinese? Sorry, I forgot. That's not important. Chinese still fight against each other until today. So, no point. There is no such thing as a Chinese cause in Malaysia. Not anymore.

So, you had better leave Malaysia for your children's education sake. By the way, why should you go Down Under? Not proud to be a Chinese? For context, please read Sun2Surf *****here (last para).

What’s morally wrong with the truth?

By R Nadeswaran,
Columnist, theSun

Monday, 18 Aug 2008

BEFORE this column was written, the opinion of learned friends was sought as this newspaper does not want a mob outside its office. Could this scribe, a beer-drinking and bak kut teh loving person, write on a word that some believe is exclusively theirs? Would such a comment be against the rule of the religion? Would some religious zealot decree that those who used the word be subjected to the order given out on Salman Rushdie? Ordinarily, such thoughts would be described as "over-acting", but in times when mobs are allowed to rule under the watchful eyes of those in power, it is better to be safe than sorry.
So, consultation was done. We had an assurance from at least five fellow Malaysians who are Muslims, including my colleague Zainon Ahmad, that we can touch on the issue of jihad – not the holy war but on a pronouncement by the former women and family development minister and defeated Lembah Pantai member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

Last week, she declared a jihad against an individual whom she said should not be given the chance to destroy the country’s political stability and prosperity. No one would have a quarrel with such a stand. After all, everyone has a right to declare war on anything. For that matter, the government had previously declared war on drugs, resulting in harsh penalties being imposed on traffickers and pushers.

So, while her jihad or war is against an individual, would it be more beneficial if our resources and efforts are directed at a bigger problem, if not the biggest problem facing our nation and its future?

We wonder if Shahrizat would make a similar stand on corruption and other immoral and unethical conduct which have afflicted our society. Such a war would certainly help the authorities to wipe out corruption. After all, the Corruption Perception Index does little to flatter the egos of those who claim that "we have won the war on corruption". Besides, she has the numbers behind her which she can mobilise to ensure that her jihad succeeds.

The Anti-Corruption Agency’s education unit can provide enough material to use in the jihad and more importantly, it would break all religious and racial barriers with people from all walks of life who view corruption as damaging the basic fabric of our society.

This may not be asking too much because time, effort and money spent on fighting an individual would be more useful in fighting something even our prime minister has commented about. Over to you, Datuk Seri Shahrizat.

TALKING about morality, Shahrizat’s successor at the ministry has sent out the wrong message by making a public stand that leaders should not be judged on their standards of morality. And if such a stand makes up part of her values, then it is all right to engage in other immoral acts such as corruption, dishonesty and misuse of power. Using the argument, then we as taxpayers and voters have no right to question or judge those who indulge in corrupt practices.

More than 25 years ago, this scribe interviewed prominent Pulitzer Prize winner, US journalist and columnist Jack Anderson, over Voice of America radio. He rose to fame exposing the antics of rogue politicians. His roguish techniques included eavesdropping, spiriting away classified documents, rifling through garbage and sometimes blatant threats – methods he defended as justified in his lifetime campaign to keep government honest.

One of the questions that we asked him was: "Who gives journalists the right to pry into the private affairs of people?"

His reply went something like this: "If your neighbour is having an affair with the gardener, I would call it private. But if we have a Senator who goes around preaching about moral standards and has fathered a child out of wedlock, the journalist has a right to expose him. If you want to be a leader, don’t have skeletons in your cupboard."

We are not in the least suggesting that all our leaders have skeletons in their cupboards, but I was shocked when the minister was quoted as saying: "I do not dare decide or judge someone else’s morality except my own. Can you give me a leader who scores a 100% mark in morality?"

Are we to assume that ALL our leaders will fail a simple morality test or can it be read as indication that we can brace ourselves for more video?

All said and done, Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen has two simple questions to answer. One: Was it morally right on her part to take an oath of allegiance to the King and country when being appointed Senator in the Dewan Negara while being a permanent resident of Australia? She has since said that she did it for the sake of her three children’s education. Then that too has to be answered: Was it morally right to take up PR status just for the sake of her children’s education? Did she not deceive the government of Australia? And more importantly by having one foot Down Under, is she implying that she does not have faith in the country’s future and its education system? People living in glass houses should not throw stones.

Aussie women too timid at work

AUSTRALIAN women have been branded the world's most timid at work, afraid of appearing too pushy.

Article from: THE ADVERTISER

Even British women, with their reputation for being meek, are better than their Aussie counterparts at showcasing their skills.
Aussie women too timid at work
Sabotaged by female bosses
Motherhood kills careers

AUSTRALIAN women are among the most timid in the world when it comes to self-promotion at work and career networking, a survey shows.

US researcher Shannon Goodson says Australia's professional women are not earning what they are worth because they "struggle with stage fright and sensitivities about appearing too forward, pushy or intrusive", the Advertiser reports.

Some are also hampered by female bosses who sabotage their advancement prospects.

Her international survey says British women are the best at self-promotion.

They are followed by American women, while Chinese women outboast their male colleagues when it comes to advancing their own interests at work.

Ms Goodson said she was surprised by the results, given the stereotype of the meek English woman and the brash, outspoken Aussie.

PERMATANG PAUH BY-ELECTION: Toh quits Gerakan

by Himanshu Bhatt

newsdesk@thesundaily.com

SEBERANG PERAI (Aug18, 2008) : Gerakan senior member Datuk Dr Toh Kin Woon resigned from the party today, a day after he visited a PKR operations centre in Permatang Pauh to show support for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the parliamentary by-election there.

Datuk Dr Toh Kin Woon

Toh is the chief executive officer and director of the Socio-Economic and Environmental Institute (Seri), an independent non-profit think-tank set up by the state government.

He is also the chairman of the Penang State Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (Pessoc), and a former Penang executive councillor.

Toh has been known to issue statements on human rights and freedom of expression, sometimes in contrast to stands taken by the BN leadership.

He first raised eyebrows while a BN state executive councillor in 1999 when he showed up at a Hari Raya function at Anwar’s house in Cherok Tok Kun here after Anwar had been sacked from Umno in 1998.

In May, he criticised the Education Department for abiding by a federal directive of disallowing the Pakatan Rakyat state government from going to Tamil schools to give away prescription spectacles. The charity programme had been initiated during his days as executive councillor.

Contacted today, Toh, who was a Gerakan central committee member, said he quit the party without any ill feeling.

He had faxed his resignation to the party office in Penang at 4.10pm.

He said he decided to leave Gerakan to save the party from embarrassment arising from his having a different stand than the official party line.

He also clarified that he had not been pressured or questioned by the party after he had shown up at the PKR centre.

Toh said he would now concentrate on his involvement with NGOs.

Koh: Political tsunami a blessing in disguise for the rakyat

By Humayun Kabir

IPOH (Aug17, 2008): Parti Gerakan believes the political tsunami that hit the country in the March 8 general election is a blessing in disguise for the rakyat as they can now choose between two coalitions.

"This is the beginning of a two-coalition system era and it looks positive although (the tsunami) dealt almost a fatal blow to Barisan Nasional's component parties." said Gerakan Acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, adding that the rakyat can now have their say in the running of the government and choose coalition they think will best serve their interests and aspirations.

"However, the present status quo at national and state levels must not be changed by money politics and other undemocratic ways which goes against the rakyat who have expressed their democratic rights through the ballot boxes," he said.

Koh was unhappy with events at state and national levels by both BN and Pakatan Rakyat to try to change the choice of government that was made by the people.

"I asked (Datuk Seri Mohd) Tajol (Rosli Ghazali) why he was doing this (trying to take back Perak from under PR government by Aug 31). He said they are trying to do the same thing at federal level."

Koh also hit out at Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for politicising that he will win over about 30 BN MPs to form the PR government at federal level by Sept 16.

"Right now he (Anwar) can take 30 seats by undemocratic means which means he too can face a whiplash later as 10 or even more MPs might cross back to BN."

"Do we have a federal government that changes every two months?" he askedin his speech when he officiated the party’s Perak delegates conference at a hotel here yesterday.

He said there are positive signs in Malaysian politics as the talk of multi-racial politics is shaping up in a few BN component parties.

Koh said that BN parties that once practised racial politics like MIC and MCA are now opening to the idea of multi-racial politics.

He also called on Malaysians to practise the true form of democracy and not be 'demo-crazy’ as is the trend with some Malaysians today .

Perak Gerakan mulls calling for party to leave BN
By Humayun Kabir

IPOH (Aug 17, 2008): Fed-up with racial and religious sentiments played up by certain Barisan Nasional component parties for their own political millage, Perak Gerakan is contemplating calling for the party to leave the coalition.

Datuk Chang Ko Youn

The majority of the 378 Gerakan delegates who attended the party state delegates meeting today, expressed disgust at the fanning of racial and religious issues which is causing much anxiety and concern among Malaysians at large.

"Racial and religious sentiments have been fanned by a few component parties for the past five months since March 8, causing much uneasiness and fear among Malaysians as to the path the country is heading to," said Perak Gerakan chairman Datuk Chang Ko Youn.

"Most of the delegates at today’s party meeting expressed their wish that Gerakan pull out of BN as they are unhappy over the fanning of sensitive issues that would bring disunity among fellow Malaysians."

"That this is against the party’s principles which advocates the concept of Malaysia for all Malaysians which is free from racial and religious politics," he told reporters after the meeting officiated by Acting Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

Present at the meet were party adviser Tun Lim Keng Yaik, National Youth chairman Datuk Mah Siew Keong and senator Datuk Dr S. Vijayaranam.

Chang said the move to leave BN has taken shape last year by many party members but this momentum to leave the BN coalition only gained speed after March 8th general elections.

"This issue will be debated in the party’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in October and a decision (whether to leave or stay with BN) will be taken at the meeting."

Similar views were also voiced by PGRM National chairwoman Datuk Tan Lian Hoe who said that many state as well as federal level wanita party delegates had voiced such a call to leave BN.

"We will forward the request to the party. The issue is expected to be debated extensively and hotly before a decision is made on the matter," said Tan, who is also state Wanita chief and Deputy Information Minister.

Similar sentiments were also expressed by newly elected state Youth Chief Chuah Chee Kuan who said it is about time that Malaysians think as one instead of along racial lines.

Later, Koh who was with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in Permatang Pauh to campaign for Barisan Nasional said the issue of Gerakan leaving BN does not exist.

Commenting on Tan' statement asking Gerakan to leave BN because Umno was too racist, Koh said

Tan was merely reflecting the feedback of the people.

"I was shocked to hear her making the statement. (She) as a Deputy Information Minister will get a lot of feedback from the people and I think what she was saying was the voice of the people.

"I am still unable to contact her, but the party will talk about it," he told reporters when the question was posed to Abdullah.

"The issue of Gerakan leaving BN does not exist," he stressed.

Essay writing in *four body parts

desiderata.english

If some of you feel the heat, don't come into this Sunday's kitchen because this morning I am lighting up the fire. If you don't know how to read in between the lines, I won't sympathise because some subjects are best writ riddled with potholes, puddles and sinkholes -- and if you emerge from the battlefield unscathed and clean, you are a winner. Othervice/otherwise (the first is DDC, the second is normalised English which is for uninitiates or first-timers at MBH, who I also raise a cup of tehtarik to, like to one Skading Yesterday whose troubles with F&N seemed forever will stay...), join the club of whiners which YL the Essayist doeth belong not.

A one paragraph will do as Introduction, I told two pre-University students at a quick-fix lesson Yesterday -- for us in Furong, all of troubles seemed so far away:) -- it's the body-count that counts. No less than four paragraphs, each well enunciated with a core point. Cut out the fluff, gift the meat as we all savour the juicy parts and ENJOY! Yes, writing a student's ESSAY is like cooking up -- if you wrote 'down' instead of 'up', who am I to defer? -- a meal, each ingredient is a body part. The introduction is alike the Chef's willing hands.

Now B2 -- the foregoing is B1, follow the logic? -- is to smoothly move from one anatomical part to the next. If I were to employ DDC, which stands or sits for Da Desi Code, I would have writ "sext". The "s" draws thy attention, right? God created not two Adams or two Eves alone. He in all His Wisdom created one Adam plus one Eve. So the most natural instinct in Man took over, he graduated to have sex with Eve -- you couldn't forver sing lullabies to the birds and bees in the Garden of Eden, could you? So you did the most natural act -- again, and again, and again; most students would use etc, etc, etc ... but actually the right phrase would be ad nauseum. I know adam and Eve would beg to disagree (Don't follow with 'or refute'...I told S1). One man's meat is another woman's poison. Ah, sex is universally considered a dessert, quoting one Desiderotica, or I am told by my good friend zorro, entree. Front or back, it does not matter, as long as the couple Enjoy! sayethDAfool. The main course is suckling piglet, chicken chop, or Lingam's kambing rendang.

B3 is the penultimate part, which means the one before the last (I would have used 'lust" if DDC were the practice, but no, I restrain on Sundays, when I am 100percent a Capitalist and I just helped myself to two helpings of Continental Breakfast; this is a hint to my student/s that if they wish to repay my tuition, treat me on a Sunday. I'm no Connie Francis piping away of "Never on Sunday" -- I believe Adam and Eve were in Desi's class three. So if any dumbbell should ask: Why three? Here's the answer -- Adam is one, Eve is one more, Desi is another one more, so what's 1+1+1 =...?) A threesome is exhilarating, eh? This is a rhetotorical question, which means YOU don't respond, okay! An exception I maketh is zorro because he entiecth with an exciting/excitable CatherineZetaJones by hisside. (Yes, hisside is one word, for the twain shalt be joineth as unity forever, and no forces shalt maketh asunder!) I noted most electronic texts spell the verb form for practice as "practice" which I told my Americanised disciples is bastardising Shakespearean English. The right spell is "practise", as in "VK practises law -- like a chambering student."

Ah, we arrive at B4, which is body part four, not my favourite number. Mine is se7en which by the way, was also Phelps' Yesterday when the American swam to this numbered heavenly gold. In the preceding paragraph I used the word "bastardised" -- yes, I had the Americans in mind. Because the United States became, and still remains, the sole superpower in the world following the collapse of the Soviet Union into a dozen parts, the Americans singlenationally determine worldwide trends, including rendering the English language into the simplest form. Drop the "u", as in labo(u)r, drop another u, as in hono(u)r. Desi sometimes wryly adds: drp the "R", as in f(R)iend...

In conclusion, I put on record that today's rumination -- two words having a similar meaning are reflection and contemplation -- is chiefly, (the "i" added is to show I make a good cook sometimes, with words asmy ingredients and bodily part-components) for the benefit of S1 and S2. Okay, enough of suspense, S1 is for student one, and S2 is... One lesson I've leart in Blogging is to "Never insult your readers". Esteemed. The "esteemed" refers to this writer.

How little in me is not touched by you!

How little in me is not touched by you!
A friendship is a light that fills the heart,
Painting with its gold each darkened hue,
Providing warmth to each sequestered part.
You are the mirror of my better self,
Verifier of the best in me,
A bridge across the unsuspected gulf
Lodged between what can and ought to be.

Segamat students protest Selangor MB's proposal

By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH

SEGAMAT: Another group of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) students, this time in Segamat, staged a protest against a proposal for the university to open its doors to other races.

The big group of students on Friday staged a peaceful protest inside the university's compound before marching to the university's mosque for Friday prayers.

Johor Universiti Teknologi Mara student council president Mohd Izkhairi Ibrahim said the students were against any plan to open the university to other races.

He said the proposal by Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim for UiTM to accept 10% of non-bumiputra students was uncalled for and they would not accept it.

Mohd Izkhairi said there were about 20 universities in the country for the authorities to implement such a plan but not at UiTM as it would only rob the Malays of their rights.

Meanwhile, UiTM's corporate affairs coordinator Jafri Jawahir said besides staging the protest, the students also launched a signature campaign on Friday.

He said the group expected to collect more than 5,000 signatures from the students and they planned to submit the signatures to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The students together with the Federation of Peninsular Malay Students or Gabungan Pelajar-Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung will submit the protest signatures to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi soon, he added.

IS MALAYSIA A JURASSIC PARK?

By Yong Thye Chong aka Kim Quek

August 14, 2008

Can those people thumping their chests to condemn Selangor Mentri Besar Khalid Ibrahim’s suggestion to allocate 10% of student admission of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) to non-bumiputra and foreign students please answer one simple question.

Is there a single university in the world which practises 100% racial discrimination in its student enrolment?

If there is none, shouldn’t these same people start to do some reflective thinking now as to whether it is a plus or minus for Malaysia to have this unique distinction?

Should they not contemplate on whether they are proud or not so proud of this ‘achievement’?

Should they not be concerned of what the rest of the world might think of a country that is still fanatically defending its policy of total racial discrimination in its highest seat of learning when the whole world has either abandoned or criminalized racial discrimination of all kinds? Are they not worried that Malaysia may soon acquire the image of ‘Jurassic Park’ or ‘Lost World’ of this globalised age?

Yes, I use the word ‘fanatically’ because the outburst against Khalid’s suggestion was swift, vituperative, irrational, racist and spearheaded by top UMNO leaders and reverberated down to UiTM students who gathered in the thousands to protest in front of Khalid’s office. Vocal assailers include unfortunately the minister of higher education Khaled Nordin and UiTM vice-chancellor Ibrahim Abu Shah; and vitriolic criticisms include ‘selling out Malay special privileges’, ‘insult to his own race’, and ironically even ‘playing with racial sentiments’.

Surprisingly, even the Constitution was brought in to defend UiTM’s 100% racial discrimination policy, displaying wide-spread ignorance of the Constitution. Vice-chancellor Ibrahim specifically referred to Article 153 of the Constitution as legal basis for his refusal to open the door of UiTM to other races. Whereas the reverse is true –- Article 153 only empowers the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to request for the reservation of such proportion of positions as deemed reasonable for the Malays and natives of Sabah and Sarawak in educational institutions funded by the government. Coupled with Article 8 which prohibits discrimination of any kind on the ground of race, UiTM’s 100% racial policy is clearly unconstitutional.

The fanatical zeal displayed by the ruling party (UMNO) in condemning even the tiniest opening of its mono-racial institution to others in this multi-racial nation half a century after Independence is undoubtedly a terrible indictment on the miserable failure of nation-building carried out by the only ruling coalition this nation has ever known led by UMNO.

It should be pointed out that this UiTM fiasco is the latest in a long string of world renowned scandals that have shamed this country in a short spell of time –- starting with the Lingam tape that reveals our judicial rot, the Mongolian high-level murder trial that drills on endlessly and aimlessly, the Anwar sodomy frame-up saga II which symbolises the regime’s moral bankruptcy, the violent disruption of Bar Council forum on family problems arising from conversion to Islam that displays religious intolerance. What alarms the public even more is that these scandals seem to roll in with increasing frequency and speed, destroying what little trust and confidence the people may still have with the government. Are we as a nation already in the reverse gear sliding into an abyss?

With these self-destructive maneuvers, apparently self-engineered for its own political survival, UMNO is actually stretching the political and social fabric of the nation into a danger zone. How then could Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi in all honesty announce that the country “is doing quite well in terms of the economic fundamentals” when the economy is already deeply troubled with slumping demand amidst spiraling inflation in an environment of administrative incompetence, and escalating political turmoil and uncertainty?

The latest two incidents – Bar Council forum and UiTM enrolment – appear to be linked to the imminent Permatang Pauh by-election through which Anwar Ibrahim is planning to make his grand return to Parliament. It is apparent that UMNO is hell bent to exploit every bit of potential religious and racial friction and blow it up to inflame the primordial instincts of the 70% Malay electorate in the Permatang Pauh constituency. Its policy seems to be: There is no price too high for UMNO to retain power, including stoking the fire of racial hatred and religious animosity that may eventually rift the nation apart.

The nation must decide whether it can tolerate such an incumbent political power to continue to hold the reign of government. And that collective decision, if in the negative, can be put into effect (to a significant extent) by the electorate of Permatang Pauh by giving Anwar Ibrahim a resounding victory.

The Nut Graph to brighten the media scene

I was engrossed in following our Malaysian shuttlers' fortunes at the Olympics when an SMS from fellow newshound, Jacqueline Ann Surin, informed that The Nut Graph has made its APpearance. I believe this new online newspaper will surely add colour and light to the local media scene -- and the Malaysian state of democratic space and discourse will reap benefits as more seasoned journalists launch such initiatives to offer the readers CHOICE.

At the end of the day, harsh reality will prove that truism inherently propounded by Charles Drawin's Evolution Theory will hold -- ONLY THE FITTEST WILL SURVIVE. Open market and competitition will ensure that in all worldly environments, including MEDIA, both old and new.

I sincerely extend to the A*team headed by award-winning Jac -- mostly ex-theSun, yes? -- CONGRATULATIONS and smooth sailing ahead!:)

Here's an initial serving from the guysy newshound who also helmed MalaysiaVotes in the leadup to the 12th General Elections climaxing March 8, 2008 -- ala Lee Chong Wei's semi-finals win I just savoured from 6.30PM -- extracting from thenutgraph.com:

Keeping the public's interest

By Jacqueline Ann Surin

“SEX, Jacky. It’s what people want to read! It’s what will sell the paper!” This is how my former editor at the first newspaper I worked in justified the images of sexy women and titillating stories in the paper. Often, it felt as if he could have gleefully continued with “Sex, and more sex!” as the newspaper’s circulation climbed.

Perhaps the “give readers what they want to read” formula works to some extent, because the newspaper I used to write for remains the country’s #1 English daily. And while I know there are objections within that newsroom about sexist coverage, the truth is, because newspapers are also business entities, increasing readership in order to draw in advertising revenue can be really important.

Which is why it was very refreshing and encouraging to hear Charles Glasser at a July 8, 2008 luncheon talk in Kuala Lumpur at a Bar Council- and Centre for Independent Journalism-organised training programme for media defence lawyers. A former journalist turned lawyer and trainer, Glasser is the high-profile media counsel for Bloomberg News. Glasser’s brief bio states that “much of his work involves training members of the media on how to exercise their freedom to speak responsibly.”

In his talk titled Working as Media Counsel in the 21st Century: A New Paradigm, Glasser said: “What is of interest to the public need not necessarily be in the public’s interest.” If ever an apt and succinct response was needed to the argument that the media need sex, women and salacious scandals to sell, this was it, I thought.

One of the core values and practices newsrooms should have, Glasser argued, is that the media needs to serve the public interest. “The public interest is not what the public merely ‘finds’ interesting; the public interest is served when those with something at stake have the opportunity to learn facts that affect their health, safety, financial or physical security.”

And so, while a newspaper that focuses on what kind of model Altantuya Shaariibuu was, for example, may have pulled more readers, it really misses the point of serving the public interest if it doesn’t ask a far more important question: Who had the authority to direct special action unit personnel to blast her up with restricted explosives?

Public interest is also not served when the media only react to what’s new or current all the time. Yes, it’s true that the “news” is about what’s new, but when the media hop from one new issue to the next, what tends to happen is that “older”, unresolved issues tend to be forgotten.

A good example is the coverage on the Auditor General’s annual report. Every year, the media have a field day with the Auditor General’s disclosures of corruption and inefficiencies involving public funds. Every year, the issues are forgotten by the media within a couple of weeks, until the following year’s report. “Older” stories tend to end up smaller in paragraph length, and further back in the inside pages, until the issue vanishes from the media, and the public’s, consciousness.

At The Nut Graph, we hope we will be able to serve public interest ethically, responsibly and with courage. The nut graph is the paragraph that explains the point of a story. In a nutshell, it tells readers why something is significant enough that it needed to be written and published and read.

What is of significance to the public’s interest is not always what is new or what is salacious. While it may be riveting coffeeshop talk to keep abreast of the latest sodomy accusations against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, does it really serve the public interest if the media allocates so much resources to the latest twists and trysts at the expense of other larger issues that need serious national attention? As unsexy or “old” as the issue of urban poverty may be at a time when sex scandals are the talk of town, do we serve the public interest when we report on the scandals and forget about the stories of social inequality that really need to be told?

This is why, at The Nut Graph, we plan to not just do spot reporting of the latest breaking news; we plan to also connect the dots for readers so that we can all make sense of what’s going on in and outside the country, and so that we can respond intelligently and responsibly as informed and knowledgeable citizens. And we plan to carry out journalism that is as ethical, fair and responsible as possible. Where we fail, we hope we will be held accountable.

Will we draw eyeballs to our site so that we can make The Nut Graph financially viable through income from advertisements? That’s left to be seen because it’s as much a decision by readers and advertisers as it is ours in managing the business aspect of our humble outfit.

What matters, though, is whether we, as journalists, can serve the public interest as the latest media in town. Our readers will be our judge, but as Stephen Covey states in The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, it’s best to start with the end in mind.

Sniper shoots female reporter on live TV
Footage comes as Rice tries to seal peace
Pictures: Human cost of the Georgia conflict

A REPORTER has been shot by a sniper while covering the Georgian conflict - with the dramatic footage appearing live on TV.

Gunshots are heard and the correspondent - named by British media as Tamara Urushadze - is seen to fall to the ground.

But in the panic that follows she still tries to continue her report for public television.

Urushadze is seen with a bloody arm after the attack, and apparently escapes with a graze.

But the coverage is further evidence of the continuing violence in Georgia, even as US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice tries to get a peace deal signed today.

Georgian President Micheil Saakashvili this morning accused irregulars associated with the Russian army of raping and looting their way across his country.

"This army travels around with irregulars, travels around with marauders, travels around with rapists, travels around with arsonists, robbers and with looters," he said.

Just hours earlier, Georgia's prime minister said a convoy of more than 100 Russian tanks and other vehicles were moving from the western city of Zugdidi deeper into Georgia.

Lado Gurgenidze said it was unclear where the tanks were going or why, but suggested Russian forces were "trying to rattle the civilian population".

Meanwhile US President George W. Bush said the standoff with Russia over Georgia could stretch "throughout the coming weeks".

"My call, of course, is for the territorial integrity of Georgia to be respected and for the ceasefire agreement to be honoured," he said. "And we will be working this issue throughout the coming weeks."

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Ms Rice would today ask Georgia's president to sign a ceasefire document that will pave the way for Russian troops to pull back.

"If ... Saakashvili signs the document that we have negotiated with (Russian President) Mr (Dmitry) Medvedev, then the withdrawal of Russian troops can begin," he said.

Pupils find teacher's steamy snaps on Facebook

Kids find steamy photos on teacher's Facebook page
Pupils share images on phones before access stopped
School says kids shouldn't have Facebook access

DOZENS of students as young as 11 have stumbled across steamy images of their male teacher during a web search.

The teacher's Facebook site carried an image of a hand down the front of one man's pants and a link inviting users to suck the teacher's "lollipop", according to a witness.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How private should we keep our private lives? Should we be more cautious on social networking sites? Have your say
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Victorian parents who complained to the school said the principal blamed them for the children's shock find.

The Department of Education is being urged to warn teachers against posting lewd images of themselves online.

The furore is the latest in a string of cases that test the boundaries between teachers' classroom roles and their private lives.
A physical education school teacher was recently forced to defend himself after appearing semi-naked on Make Me a Supermodel, Jennifer Hawkin's new reality TV show.
Pictures: Steamy photo shoot

But Rhys Uhlich, 24, said he understood his responsibilities as a teacher and people were just getting carried away.

"I find it funny that all of these people are commenting on me, saying I'm a terrible role model, and yet none of them have ever been into my classroom and watched me teach and see how I interact with the kids," Mr Uhlich said.

In March, Australia's swimming sweetheart Stephanie Rice, 19, became embroiled in a Facebook controversy after a series of snaps on her profile page revealed a wild side to the Olympic champion.

The swimmer was pictured dressed in a skimpy policewoman's uniform as well as shimmying around a pole.

And politicians have also been warned about the dangers of Facebook. More politicians are creating profiles to engage with constituents and the community at large. But, without knowing exactly what they are doing, MPs are also getting themselves into trouble.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Nerve: Should teachers be allowed to strip?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Child protection advocate Bernadette McMenamin said students entered their teacher's name into a search engine and clicked on the results - a Facebook page.

The social networking site's terms of use restrict access to students over 13, but its open access or "public" pages can be picked up on a general search.

Ms McMenamin, whose son attends the school, said she was told up to 30 students had seen or heard about the site.

Some had shared pictures on their mobile phones before the school had the teacher modify or restrict access to the site, she said.

Ms McMenamin saw the site before it was modified and described its contents as "raunchy".

She said teachers should be mindful of their role model status in the classroom.

"Kids Google everything," Ms McMenamin said.

"Children of this age are basically curious and that's why cyber safety is failing.

"We talk about educating children about the internet, but I think the department needs to educate their teachers on cyber safety and what's appropriate for a teacher to share online."

She accused the school of mishandling the case by responding to her complaint with an email that said: "If adults or siblings are giving our children access (to Facebook) then it is a concern more widely."

A Department of Education spokeswoman defended the school.

"The school has taken appropriate action to ensure its teachers exercise discretion when posting material on sites such as Facebook."

She did not say whether all teachers would be cautioned.

The principal did not return the Herald Sun's call yesterday.

In a Changing Corner of Pa., a Glimpse of Obama's Age Problem

By Alec MacGillis
Washington Post Staff Writer

Tuesday, August 12, 2008; Page A04

LANCASTER, Pa.
-- When Gene Rutherford, 65, tries to make sense of the meteoric rise of Barack Obama, and the rampant enthusiasm for him among younger Americans, he thinks of the local mall, where as director of operations he often deals with teenagers.

"Kids today have been given everything they want, and don't have to work for it. They have no respect for authority," said Rutherford, standing at the bar at the Elks lodge here. "They'll make remarks right to the face of the [mall] cops. I get to the point where I want to do something," he said, cocking a fist as if to threaten a punch. "But the police say we can't, that we just have to stand there." It makes him worry for the country. "I see it going the Roman way."

If the senator from Illinois is going to achieve his goal of bridging the nation's divides, he is going to have to overcome a generation gap with older voters unlike any such split a Democratic presidential nominee has faced in years.

Even as younger voters are showing signs of breaking with years of lackluster turnout to support him, Obama is facing singular resistance from voters over 65. That age group turns out at the highest rate on Election Day and is disproportionately represented in the swing states of Florida and Pennsylvania; Bill Clinton and Al Gore both relied on it in winning the Democrats' only popular-vote majorities of the past two decades.

With polls showing Obama dominating among those under 40 and running even among middle-aged voters, Republican John McCain's lead among those 65 and older is the main reason he remains close overall. His margin is largest among older white voters without a college education, accounting for much of Obama's problem with the white working class.

Obama has tried to compensate by proposing a tax cut for seniors, which was criticized by economists. But as Rutherford's comments suggest and surveys show, Obama's challenge goes deeper than a new proposal or two -- an approach that worked for Clinton against George H.W. Bush and Robert J. Dole.

Surveys and interviews suggest that older voters think McCain, who will turn 72 this month, comes far closer than Obama, 47, to sharing their values and outlook on the world and on the changes in the nation over the past half-century.

"The older people just don't see Obama in these glowing terms," said Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center. "For older voters, a lot of the reservations really have to do with this experience factor, while younger voters see in Obama something much closer to themselves."

The generational split is on display in Lancaster, a city of 55,000 in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, a once solidly Republican area that is growing more mixed with an influx of Hispanic immigrants and urban professionals.

Trying to sustain itself amid the city's changes is the local branch of the Elks Club, the 140-year-old fraternal organization, which like similar groups is losing members. Rutherford, who served two terms as his branch's "exalted leader," sees a link between falling membership -- from 1,200 a decade ago to 680 today -- and Obama's popularity among local youths.

"Kids want to think for themselves -- they don't care what Mom and Dad say," said Rutherford, a burly man with a Manhattan in his hand. "This was a Republican stronghold, but it's changing very quickly because it's 'Mom and Dad, you're Republican, so I ain't ever going to be one of them.' "

Rutherford's pessimism does not extend to his own four children, three of whom followed him and his father and grandfather in becoming Elks. He presumes that they lean Republican, as he does, though he votes Democratic now and then and wishes former Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge, a Republican who supports abortion rights, were the GOP nominee.

CSM: Spread the word, 'Cos we care for Civil Society

Joint Press Statement:
Malaysians must affirm free speech and denounce religious intolerance

Tuesday, August 12, 2008, 1:14 PM

Dewan Perhimpunan China Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor

吉隆坡暨雪兰莪中华大会堂

The Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall

Joint Press Statement on 12th August 2008

Malaysians must affirm free speech and denounce religious intolerance

We the undersigned organizations call upon all Malaysians to categorically express their disapproval of the actions of a small minority that resorted to intimidatory action to stop the forum on "Conversion to Islam: Art 121(1A) of the Federal Constitution, Subashini & Shamala Revisited" organized by the Bar Council on August 9.

While it is necessary for all Malaysians to be mindful of religious sensitivities, such respect must not extend to the condoning of extreme acts which are aimed at curbing legitimate public discussion.

In the specific case of the Bar Council seminar, we are given to understand that it was primarily an effort aimed at helping to clarify various legal and administrative provisions on religious conversion issues. The forum could have provided useful inputs on helping resolve recent controversial developments had it not been unfairly misrepresented by various quarters, including the Government.

In fact, the organizers had taken the initiative to invite distinguished speakers from the Federal Territory Religious Affairs Department and Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKMI). Both speakers however declined invitation apparently after the forum was demonized by some quarters

We uphold the right of our fellow Malaysians to exercising their freedom to dissent and even to engage in peaceful demonstration in defence of their concerns. If the protest outside the Bar Council had been civil and dignified, it would have been fully acceptable.

Unfortunately this turned out not to be the case. Although no violence ensured, the resort of rough action and abusive shouts of "babi" (pigs), "pengkhianat" (traitors) and "balik China" (return to China) indicate an alarming level of religious intolerance by this small minority. This is completely unacceptable to us and all right thinking Malaysians.

We also note with dismay the police submission to the pressure of the protesters and their "advice" to the organizers to bring about a premature end to the meeting. This guidance follows closely on the government's own earlier reaction to the planned event and its attempt to compel the organizers to call off the event. The blatant double standards employed by Government and police in dealing with the protestors and the forum subject raises questions about the even handed and fair treatment accorded to all religions that the Government and authorities claim is happening in the country.

In this connection too, we would like to express our disappointment with the participation of the members of three political parties, UMNO, PAS and PKR as well as two parliamentarians, Zulkifli Nordin (Kulim-Bandar Baru) and Sallahudin Ayob (Kubang Kerian) in the abusive group of demonstrators. The top leadership of these three parties must instruct their members to avoid looking out for opportunistic or narrowly partisan political and religious advantage at the expense of national interest. PKR leaders' prompt censure of Zulkifli Nordin's abusive behaviour is therefore commendable and exemplary.

Finally we note with concern and condemn the petrol bombs attack directed at the previous house of Bar Council President Dato' Ambiga Sreenevasan. We hope that there is no connection between that act and the role of the Bar Council in organizing the seminar and call on the authorities to fully investigate that action and bring the perpetrators to book.

Of Human Bondage

I was pretty young -- young not pretty -- when I saw the movie adaptation of (I stand corrected!) Somerset Maughm's OF HUMAN BONDAGE. I think the actress was Yvette Mimieux (Hope I git her and spelling right2!), but male chavinist that I still am, for the life of me, I can't recall who the actor was. Hey, you young fellas outdare, tell me?!

As innocence truly accompanies ignorance, I then hardly absorbed the literary beauty of SM's bent but I did swoon over VM's contours. Yes, I had classmates at age 10 who would throw a chalk to the floor, then pick it up closer o the teacher -- yeah-lah, not male-lah! -- to challenge others to report on the colour of her UW.

If you had to ask what UW stands for, please get outa hear! Migrate to Malacca where all the under-16-year-old gals are safe from Mat Skodeng now that the CM is Ali soemthin' that rimes with kastam. I am from the NineStates,so why test Desi on Melaka's politicians' namaah?

Okay, after a long&windingroad, what's bondage?

Let's start wit' bond/s.

You have James.
You have monetised wan.
You even having those binding friends.
Also a gentleman's word. I think Desi's qualifies.

Of human bondage, I spied this extract loaned by a Voice, befriended by MidnightVoiz and vve both AP desiderata by max ehrmann....... (If you ask me what's desiderata.my admonishment: Oh no! it's not verses found at a chapel in some stupid US county around 1692 ...)

Alexander Fraser Tytler, "From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to complacency; From complacency to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage."

PKR sec-gen defends morality of defections

Terence Netto | August 9, 2008

Criticisms leveled at PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim that he was seeking to become prime minister through the ‘back door’ have drawn a sharp respond from party secretary-genera Dato Sallehuddin Hashim.

“I don’t think I’m splitting hairs when I say that to accuse Anwar of trying to form the government through the back door is unfair,” said Dato Salehuddin in comments made to Malaysiakini.

“He has not dangled any inducements to any legislator to join our coalition,” claimed Salehuddin in response to criticisms hurled at the PKR supremo by former PKR deputy president Dr Chandra Muzaffar who denounced attempts to instigate BN representatives to defect to the opposition as unethical and undemocratic.

“If elected legislators join Pakatan Rakyat, they do so of their own volition, and from promptings that have more to do with their perception of who can deliver a better deal to the constituencies they represent than from considerations of personal advancement,” argued Dato Sallehuddin.

“Which comes first: the development needs of their constituencies neglected over 45 years or their sense of fealty to the party that fielded them as candidates?” he said

Dato Sallehuddin said given the present political morass in the country, drawing fine moral distinctions was “the privilege of observers, not of agents of action.”

“Action is what is needed to save the nation dangling on a precipice beyond which lies moral squalor in practically every aspect of governance,” said the PKR administrator.

“The government of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is patently unable to retrieve itself from this squalor. I don’t have to trot out the farcical sodomy charge against Anwar to substantiate this point.

“Just look at the accusations leveled against the No I and No 2 in the country on a host of issues, ranging from the Mongolian woman’s murder to the misuse of government machinery and funds for party purposes,” charged Dato Sallehuddin.

“Before you are done with that, there are the doubts about the top cop and the top prosecutor in the land to deal with. It’s a Pandora’s box of horrors!”

Chandra’s ‘morally deafening silence’

Dato Sallehuddin drew attention to Chandra’s pre-general election excoriation of Anwar as an unmitigated disaster should the latter become Prime Minister of Malaysia.

“A detractor who would go to indiscriminate lengths to lampoon the calibre of Anwar would now conceivably be petrified by the looming prospect of his premiership,” he mused.

“He’s got to draw his chestnuts out of the fire,” offered Dato Salehuddin about Chandra’s (right) criticisms.“Doing so on moral grounds are but a fig leaf to cover his morally deafening silence on the vast immorality of the Abdullah administration.

“If he were not silent, then I’d concede that Chandra’s strictures on the morality of defections would be hard to ignore.”

Dato Sallehuddin, nevertheless, acknowledged it would be foolhardy of PKR to denigrate the concept of honor in politics and its implications in respect of defections across party lines.

“But when you are dealing with a situation of pervasive moral squalor such as that in the country, the notion that you must abide by Marquee of Queensbury rules is a recipe for paralysis,” he claimed.

“Anwar is for proceeding, even from tangled circumstance and morally ambiguous grounds,” he asserted.

HOPE on the cancer front, foreign

DIE-lah on another type of cancer, on the CORRUPTION front, local.

Amidst all the negativities of BN and NOGO activists disrupting a totally legal, above-board and civilly conducted Bar Council forum, the Police force demo-ting like Harap pagar, pagar makan padi when dadah goes missing at the Johor HQ, and acting in concert with UMNO-oh-NO! olitikus to "fix" Saudara Anwar Ibrahim -- our only leader-agency for change left! -- and yes, the ilk of Saiful, Ezam and many patriotic UMNOputras doing honours as running dogs -- too bad the Olympics does not feature such TOP ATHLETES! -- finally we have something to cheer about!:)

From NEWS.com.au cometh HOPE for victims suffering cancer:

Aussies crack cancer secret
August 11, 2008 03:00am

AUSTRALIAN scientists are hoping to cure leukaemia, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis after their breakthrough discovery of how to stop killer blood cells growing.

The team has unlocked the secrets behind the protein which controls the way the blood cancer cells spread when it is damaged - and have found a way to stop its deadly process.

Work is now starting to design a drug to prevent the damaged proteins operating, effectively stopping the cancer as well as asthma and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.

After spending a decade uncovering the structure of the receptor protein, which sits on the surface of white blood cells, lead researcher Professor Michael Parker, of Melbourne's St Vincent's Institute, said scientists could now build a drug to attach itself to the protein and stop it sending messages into the cells telling them to multiply unchecked.

"If we can stop the signal for the proliferation of uncontrolled growth of the cells then we can stop the leukaemia in its tracks," he said.

Working with molecular biologists at Adelaide's Hanson Institute, the Melbourne scientists used X-ray and synchrotron imaging to build an image of the structure of the protein for the first time, hoping to find a way to block its process.

The GM-CSF hormone - which controls the production of blood cells in the body - works by attaching itself to the receptor proteins, which then send a message into white blood cells telling them to multiply.

When damaged, the protein's messages cause an over-production of cells or cells which persist too long, resulting in diseases such as leukaemia as well as some inflammatory conditions.

The major breakthrough came when the researchers realised the proteins linked together to form networks on the surface of white blood cells after being activated by the hormone, and that by stopping the networks forming they could also stop the growth.

Liam Heudebourck, who was diagnosed with asthma four years ago, was yesterday hopeful about the discovery.

The Camden seven-year-old was admitted to hospital in March after suffering a major attack.

"If scientists found a cure or something that could help not to have his puffer every day, that would be great," his mother, Belinda English said.

While the drug development phase has only just begun, Professor Parker said it would be easier to target a protein on the surface of the cell rather than trying to come up with a molecule to break its way into the centre of the cell.

Morning Has Broken

By: Cat Stevens

Morning has broken, like the first morning.
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird.
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning,
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word.

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven.
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetnes of the wet garden,
Sprung in completeness where His feet pass.

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning.
Born of the one light Eden saw play.
Praise with elation, praise every morning;
God's recreation of the new day.

Morning has broken, like the first morning.
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird.
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning,
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word.

SO, Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of
A neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence.

Fools said I, you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you.
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, the words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.

Anwar Ibrahim-A blast from the past, a cynical conspiracy in 6 parts
Friday, August 08, 2008
You can see Ezam then and Mahathir who can candidly and explicitly describes masturbation. This is one farce the Malaysian people will not forget. A farce orchestrated against Anwar by the highest echelons in UMNO. Just a reminder of the sordid conspiracy against Anwar, in the face of the second farce too, known as Sodomy 2. This is a sign that the current regime is a on a spiralling downward slide.

Sodomy -where do politicians come from????
Wednesday, August 06, 2008
A woman went to her doctor for advice. She told him that her husband had developed a penchant for anal sex and she was not sure that it was such a good idea.

'Do you enjoy it?' The doctor asked.

' Well actually, yes, I do.', she exclaimed.

'Does it hurt you?' he asked.

'No. I rather like it.'

'Well, then,' the doctor continued, 'there's no reason that you shouldn't practice anal sex, if that's what you like, so long as you take care not to get pregnant.'

The woman was mystified....'What? You can get pregnant from anal sex?''

'Of course,' the doctor replied. 'Where do you think politicians come from?"

non-olympic spirit though de GAMES has begun

I stayed up past midnight to catch the opening ceremony of the BEIJING OLYMPICS, and a lifting extravaganza that will pay China dividends for the coming decade.

As the rest of this AM was taken up with some backlogged work, I now resort to two C&P from the online newspaper that's FREE, and gives thee much better write-up than one rival senior by a decade! -- in terms of professional news reporting, commentary and other journalistic writing, in IMHO, you can beg to differ, but Desi ain't deferring to thee! -- so here's to The Malaysian Insider:

A view of the chaos in the hall at the forum (My dear ER, Visualise-lah, can?).

By Debra Chong

KUALA LUMPUR,
Aug 9 — An open forum organised by the Bar Council to discuss matters of conflict in family law arising from one party's conversion to Islam today was interrupted by protesters from several Malay-Muslim movements.

In her opening speech, Bar Council president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan invited the protesters to join the forum and share their dissenting views.

"I'm aware this forum has drawn many criticisms from many quarters. I don't have a problem with criticism... there are demonstrators outside, you can hear them," she said.

Jerking her chin towards the windows at the back of the auditorium, she continued: "We have absolutely no quarrel with them. They are exercising their freedom of speech. We hope they'll be allowed to carry out their demonstration peacefully. We're certainly not lodging any police report."

Harsher actions if Bar Council holds more forums on religion, warn Muslim protesters

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 — Muslim protesters threatened to take harsher actions against the Bar Council if it holds similar forums on religion. The group of about 300 protesters managed to shut down the controversial council forum on conversions to Islam today.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat's Zulkifli Noordin, who took the lead this morning to address the protesters, said: "If they do it again we will take a stern action."

The first-term Kulim Bandar Baharu MP, who is also a lawyer, declared their protest a success after the forum was declared closed a little before 10am after the police advised the organisers to end it due to the noisy protest outside and in the hall. The forum was supposed to end at 1pm.

DESIDERATA: To YL Chong the newshound, and to Desi, the socialist writHer-Blogger, I deem this a HUGE LETDOWN. The scenes (I saw on TV news) remind me of hooligans from UMNO Youth led by its deputy chief (the later keris-wielding idiotic chief was in hibernation then--I presume...) marching on the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall housing the SUQIU operations centre about 10 years ago "threatening to burn down" the Election Appeals' non-governmental organisation's office. I remember the episode well since I was then still in active online journalism and "those were the days" of reformasi in the air ringing out loud in the capital city.

I can understand if this morning's crowd was led by UMNO Youth and MCA/MIC lackeys in tow -- BUT PKR? Are there some wolves in sheep's clothings, here/hear?

PS: I'm gonna move more into the Beijing arena of sports than listen to hooligans advocating freedom of speech and religious practice. BUT when it suits their mornic agenda, they throw their vaunted beliefs out of the window, and set out to destroy the opposing views just because the contrarians don't submit to their idiotic views. Next would these morons set oil and flames to the Bar Council or other buildings?

Some of my Blogger mates have become tired and weary recently. Some even went of Blog-strike, whatever that means...I too have become tired and wearng -- BUT WE HAVE REACHED THIS STAGE FOR VASTLY DIFFERENT REASONS. Mine is mainly to see leaders -- mainly from the federal Government, some form the Oppostion parties, and also the NGOs -- talking all the time but hardly walking the talk. You want examples? Buy Desi CON BF on Sundays when he eans towards capitalistic tendencies, both in theory and practice. Hey, I am also a member of the human race, Homo ... sumthn', hey!

Maybe it's time to adjourn to the SPORTS FIELD. Have some exercise -- GOoD for the body, spirit and soul.
God bless all peace-loving and negaraku-loving Malaysians.

UPDATEd
@12.40PM Sunday August 10, 2008, as follows,

Officially a statement from the Parti Keadilan Rakyat deputy President, Dr Syed Husin Ali:

CONDEMNING ACTION AGAINST BAR COUNCIL SEMINAR

This morning (9 August 2008) a small demonstration was held to oppose the seminar on "embracing Islam" organized by the Bar Council. Less than 500 demonstrators participated, although it was earlier announced than 10,000 people would be present.

The People's Justice Party (keADILan) regrets that the police force present failed to control the situation but instead appeared to collaborate with some of the demonstrators who wanted to force their way into the hall to stop the seminar. This incident reminds us of what happened during the APCET conference on East Timor that was held a few years ago, when members of Umno-Bn forced their way in to sabotage the seminar.

We take serious view of the rough action taken by a small band of the demonstrators who shouted rude and uncivilized language against some of the organizers and participants of the Seminar. We regret that unfortunately the "fiercest" among them was someone known to be a lawyer and member of parliament who pretentiously claimed himself to be "representing all the Muslims".

keADILan fully supports the view of its de facto leader, Anwar Ibrahim, that the seminar should be organized by the Bar Council behind closed doors, in view of the sensitive reactions and wrong perception among a section of the Malay-Muslim population. We are in full support of holding inter-religious dialogues that promote understanding rather than unilateral events that could create ethnic and religious dissension.

We oppose the small minority group of Umno leaders who threaten the organizers of the seminar with all kinds of actions, including the use of ISA, to force them to abandon the seminar. Obviously they do not respect the freedom of expression and organization guaranteed by the Constitution. Obviously, some of them were trying to trigger ethnic/ religious tension and conflict which could be manipulated to serve the interests of Umno and the government it leads.

On the other hand it would be better for the Bar Council not to allow itself to be trapped into the evil Umno design. It should have acted wisely and speedily to announce that the seminar would be held behind closed door to avoid any unhealthy consequence on inter-ethnic and inter-religious relations in this country. Certainly the Bar Council realizes how important it is to ensure that the agenda of the irresponsible minority elements who want to create ethnic dissension do not succeed.

CSM -- Showing Solidarity for Fellow Blogger BAKAQ

JOINT PRESS STATEMENT ON POLICE DETENTION OF BLOGGER BAKAQ

The National Alliance of Bloggers and the Centre for Policy Initiatives view with dismay the detention of another Blogger Bakaq (Abdul Rashid Abu Bakar) aka Penarik Beca, which indicates a worrying trend of the government's lack of commitment to open, public discourse. This latest detention followed the repeated police harassment of Malaysia Today editor and blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin before formally charging him with sedition and then defamation. As civil society members, we view such developments with great concern.

Bloggers in general have proven themselves useful in providing feedback to both the Government and Opposition on issues of national importance, and the Fifth Estate members do play a significant check-and-balance role in national affairs. This is well acknowledged by the opposition leaders and some in government.

The present administration must strictly adhere by and honour the Multi-Super Corridor (MSC) Bill of Guarantees conceptualised in 1996 which includes a provision that the government will not institute Internet censorship.

Any breach of the Bill of Guarantees will not only hamper the promotion of rational discourse using the Internet medium but also set back the government's efforts to draw in Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). More important, the government’s action will adversely affect international opinion on Malaysia’s commitment to basic freedoms.

We, the undersigned, therefore urge the authorities to immediately release Saudara Bakaq unconditionally, and that the government practises what it preaches about freedom of speech and the respect for human rights for all Malaysian citizens, whether they choose to agree with or beg to differ from the government's views and policies.

BLOGGERS SHOW SOLIDARITY WITH BLOGGER "PENARIK BECA" WHO HAD BEEN DETAINED OVERNIGHT

Even as the news spread in blogosphere about fellow Blogger Bakaq's detention for alleged sedition, leading writers like rockybru and zorro have sprung into action to rally support for Bakaq Haq aka Penarik Beca. Fellow bloggers will pray for Bakaq's safety and as a Blogger myself, Desi knows in our hearts, solidarity gives the Fifth Estate practitioners a sense of brotherhood and bond no government harassment can break.

A blogger who goes by the name of "BUJAI" and hosts http://justread-whatever.blogspot.com/ said the detention of Bakaq Haq aka Penarik Beca known to be a "harmless" logger, and that if the government keeps on treating bloggers like a bunch of enemies, "may as well they take in editors, journalists and owners of many publications which we regard as 'extreme' or 'radical'".

Bujai was among many concerned readers who commented at rockybru's -- National Alliance of Bloggers Interim President Ahirudin Attan -- who was possibly the first to break the news yesterady about Bakaq's detention. Bujai said...

"i liken bloggers to that of the outspoken lot living in a big family. someone has to point out who is right and wrong, whether we like it or not. this blogger is harmless and didnt mean any harm. those with ears should make correction if such allegations is true, then walk on proper path again.

if the government keeps on treating bloggers like a bunch of enemies, may as well they take in editors, journalists and owners of many publications which we regard as 'extreme' or 'radical'.

although freedom of the press cannot really be applied (when it comes to inciting public uneasiness over religion and race), we deserve to speak for the truth. sometimes it hurts, alrite but letting any wrongdoings to go on without any check is even more dangerous to our stability.

Another blogger detained in Malaysia

The pro-PAS blogger Penarik Beca, or Bakaq to friends, was picked up by cops from his home in KL just before midnight yesterday.

They also took away his computer, I was told.

A group of bloggers will be at the CCID hq (the old PM's Department near Bank Negara) at 2pm to protest the detention.

Here in Singapore, news about blogger in Malaysia remains a subject that fascinates people. My prayers for Bakaq.

Bakaq's Arrest - Bloggers Gathering at Bukit Perdana.

Friday, August 08, 2008

(L to R) Mahaguru58, Nathaniel Tan, Black @ Amin Iskandar, Hasbullah Pit @ Sebol, Wan Joe @ Jiwo Kelate.

I was at Bukit Perdana this afternoon to show my support for Brother Bakaq. It was raining very heavily when I arrived.

I had to wait in my car as most of the parking lots were full and the heavy rain saw the lower areas flooded.

I was parked at the side of the Bank Negara KTM Station.

When the rain subsided a bit, I went driving looking for a parking lot and was lucky to get one close to the Bukit Perdana Complex.

I took out my umbrella and walked towards a group of people taking shelter at the bus stop nearby.

It was then that I realized that Nathaniel Tan was amongst them. I saw Hasbullah Pit @ Sebol who greeted me warmly. I was introduced to Black @ Amin Iskandar and Nora Reformasi, Bob and Wan Joe.

(L to R) Nathaniel Tan, Black, Sebol, Wan Joe, Bob @ Bakaq's Neighbour

Group photo of Bloggers who were there to show support and solidarity with the arrested Bakaq @ Penarik Beca.

There were several reporters there as well and everyone was generally very cordial and trying their best not to get wet!

I took out my camera and started shooting videos of the gathered bloggers and we had the reporters help tie up two impromptu banners that Black had brought with him.

I had sms'd Zorro asking him if he knew Nat's hp without knowing that I would be meeting Nat in person.

Bernard @ Zorro sms'd saying that he was in the Bank Negara Cafeteria.

So, we made our way there and met Zorro and Fisherman Wharf's Gus Gan.

(L to R) Gus Gan @ Fisherman's Wharf, Black @ Amin Iskandar, Bernard Khoo @ Zorro Unmasked, Hasbullah Pit @ Sebol.

I shot a video of the Bloggers speaking their minds about Bakaq's arrest and after coffee made our way back to the bus station.

Word came out that Bakaq was now at the Jalan Duta Courts where he was served with a remand order and going to be held in custody overnight pending being charged in court.

I spoke to Bakaq's wife by phone and learned from her that he was alright. He is going to be in the lockup tonight. She said that the police told her that someone had lodged a police report against him ; that's why the police are investigating him?

I learned from the feedback that Bakaq stepped on a lot of toes @ pissed off PAS and UMNO top leadership in his disclosure of ultra secret PAS-UMNO pow wow's.

His disclosure sought of let the cat out of the bag and spoiled those people's plans.

Hence the police report and the resulting arrest under sedition.

Which particular article?

God knows!

That's it for now. Let's see what takes place tomorrow?

********

And another commenter at Rocky's post, CT Choo, said:

"rock,

I hope the bloggers will unite to protect penarik beca from beinh unjustly treated. When will UMNO-BN learn that such police-state actions only make them more unpopular than ever. I am saddened by this and, I am praying for the well-being of our fellow blogger."

Penarik Beca's detention -- Zorro has some details

and Bro Rockybru broke the story from Johor Baru with a short, showing the stuff that a blue-blooded newsman/blogger that's made of. Sdr Ahirudin Attan is aptly also AllBlogs interim council president.

I reprised from fellow kinsman/clansman/blogsfrontlinerzorro-zorro-unmasked.blogspot.com:

Thursday, August 7, 2008

WE ARE WITH YOU PENARIK BECA!
Bakaq Haq of the famous Penarik Beca bloq was arrested last night at his home in Greenwood Park, Gombak. According to his wife, 4 police personnel picked Bakaq and his laptop around 11 pm.

Around 12.30 am, Wan Joe of JiwoKelate confirmed that Bakaq is in custody at The Commercial Crime Building in Kuala Lumpur. His lawyer, Hanipa Maidin who is also PAS legal adviser confirmed that Bakaq’s arrest was done under the Seditious Act.
Bakaq or his real name is Abdul Rashid Abu Bakar has contributed a lot in revealing the hidden agenda of the infamous Muzakarah between PAS and UMNO. It is so damaging that the Deputy President of PAS, Nasharuddin Mat Isa has made a threat to sue him although later it was proven that much of what Bakaq has revealed is true.

Bakaq is not a member of any political Party but a stern supporter of PAS’s Constitution to form an Islamic Government that shall be fair to all races.

Bloggers and friends of Penarik Beca will gather at Commercial Crime Building near Bank Negara Malaysia at 2 pm today to give morale support to Bakaq.

p/s. Folks, Bakaq is a lovely person. Vocal yet very humble. I beg you to lend him you support in which ever mean he needs.

BAKAQ ALSO HOSTS "MALAYSIAKITA".

FISHERMAN GUS GAN AND I WILL BE THERE IN SOLIDARITY
WITH OUR BROTHER,

UPDATE: 5.05pm

Puan Bakaq was told to call the police at 4.00pm. At 4.35 Puan Bakaq called to say that her husband has been remanded but his whereabouts are still not known. It is believed that he was driven out of the CCD during the heavy storm at 2.30pm. If he is remanded he may be produced in court. What he will charged under is still unknown and we were not able to contact his lawyer Ms Hanipa Maidin. Before Gus and I left I asked Black (Amin Iskandar) to keep us updated. Keep faith with the family, please.

Jangan tuduh Pak Lah bodoh

Menurut beliau, “Most Malaysians share the view that Abdullah Badawi is not an astute prime minister”.

Maaf, saya juga teringat berita bertajuk "PM: I've met with PAS leaders".

UPDATE@3.07pm from The Malaysian Insider, quoting Bernama:

Blogger detained over article on police

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 — Blogger “Penarik Beca”, who real name is Abu Bakar Mohd Rashid, 50, was detained by police on Wednesday in connection with an article on his blog about the police force and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan.
The Commercial Crimes Investigation Department's investigation officer for cyber crimes, Supt Victor Sanjos, said Abu Bakar was detained at 10pm at his home in Taman Koperasi Polis here to assist investigations under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948.

"Abu Bakar published an article which showed a modified logo of the Royal Malaysia Police with derogatory comments about Musa including claims that Musa was being controlled by Chinese crime syndicates," Sanjos said yesterday.

The blogger was being detained at the Dang Wangi police station lock-up and would be released today, he added. — Bernama
