Parti Keadilan Rakyat is prepared to face the General Elections before year-end and it has conducted negotiations with the other major Opposition parties, namely PAS and DAP, to ensure a straight fight against the Barisan Nasional.
PKR Vice-President Azmin Ali told reporters in Seremban today that talks among PKR, DAP and PAS have been smooth and there is consensus among them that they share common grounds to focus on the main issues in the forthcoming elections. He acknowledged there were differences but these were "minor" compared with the general areas of agreement in facing the elections on national issues. These include the fight against corruption, abuse by the government, general concern over security and public safety due to rising crime rates and increasing inflation.
The party could sense a general dissatisfaction and disaffection for the BN government as the populace could clearly see the wrong priorities placed by the ruling government. There has been a general decline in media freedom, judiciary independence, and government service delivery in caring for the common people, according to PKR informiation chief Tian Chua. Despite the landslide victory in the March 2004 elections, Pak Lah and his adminstaraton have been large on promises, but outstanding for under-performance.
Tian also stressed that the party's struggle for change and greater check-and-balance in Parliament based on the major issues commonly identified by PAS, DAP and PKR "is not just for the coming elections. It is the party's long term commitment for promoting a better Malaysia."
Party president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail said despite the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi's assurance of top priority in the fight against corruption, the recent "swift" pronouncement of "no case" against the former Anti-Corruption Agency chief and current Inspector-General of Police was something to warrant concern among the public.
Compared with the case against Eric Chia which took years before the Perwaja Steel corruption trial, the case against the IGP and ex-ACA chief was "closed" in the twinkle of any eye -- something is definitely wrong somewhere, she added.
The PKR leaders were speaking at a press conference following the official opening by party president Wan Azizah of the Negri Sembilan PKR headquarters in Jalan Rahang, Seremban.
