There is a heArt-warming book by Mitch Albom ttitled "Tuesdays with Morrie" which I recommend all mGf to read. If today you don't want depression, go to the bookshop nearest you; do me a quick-as-lightning review; then I can sit back and relax while posting up thy GOoD-sent review for coming desiderata.english as Desi is getting very tired, Not that "tired of being tired"-ness mitochondria complained about. But yesterday's news began to have mito-c's defined tiredness creeping back onto me. See if it's doing the same to thee on this Tuesday with Worries:
From the NEW STRAITS TIMES
Monday September 5, 2005
Page 1 headline:
FEELING THE PINCH
MORE MALAYsians concerned about rising prices
25% Find it difficult to cover their living expenses
40% Not too happy about economic conditions
“The situation is not critical, but the balance overall is sgowing a negative picture. There’s a sense of people tightening their belts.” –- IBBRAHIM SUFFIAN (Center for Opinion Research programme director)
Besides the front-page quoting four sources expressing dismay and alarm, The Goooode (for once!) Olde NST - reliable consumerist that it is occasionally- also ran two full pages of the subject of concern to JoePublic on pages 4&6.
Those who miss’d the paper yesterday can borrow it off Desi’s, but be prepared to meet me at Haridas’ tonight at 8pm – 10pm when I get an update economic picture from this down-to-earth “economist”. I don’t kNOw if you can still recall, I sounded similar alarm bells months ago – based on some "reliable" feedback, including from Haridas’s report of declining business1 of some 50%, over a longer working hours2!
Page 4 leads off with headline:
Rising prices top concern
""**Kuala Kumpur, Sun. – What is the main concern of Malaysians? It is certainly not terrorism, nor the haze.
Most people. A survey reveals, are worried about rising prices.
And many are discovering the meaning of frugality.
@1While most feel confident that the economy is doing well, about one in two Malaysians are worried they will not be able to cope with inflation.
@2The rising cost of living is the top concern of almost two in five people, according to a survey on consumer sentiment by the Merdeka Center for Opinion Research.
That’s four times more than in April, when just one in 10 were worried about inflation.**"" (ends quote from news report)
The report, now paraphrased here, went on to say the Center polled more than 1,000 people, a sample structured to be representative of peninsular Malaysia. The survey has a 3.1 percent margin of error.
Just an important quote:
"To supplement their incomes, Malaysians will probably have to get second jobs or work longer hours, said Uday Jayaram, head of broking in Malaysia for Australian financial group Macquarrie Securities.
"It's a necessary economic adjustment. Malaysians will have to bite the bullet."
What worrries Desi is that second report on Page 4, headlined:
Cutting back on necessities to splurge on luxuries
Briefly, a 29-year-old civil servant said she was careful on spending on groceries. and buying clothes and shoes during sales. She, however, saves to buy an Apple's cool IPod, costing anything from RM1,200 to RM2,200, which is equivalent to her monthly pay.
She's not the only one. "Consumers have been cutting back on necessities but only so that they can splurge on extras and luxuries, according to a street poll by the New Straits Times.
DESIDERATA: Go spend RM1.20 on buying an old copy (maybe you can get it from thy neighbour for 1/2 prcie!) to educate yourself more, don't just rely on Desi's, cos he could be mis(S)-reporting!
Just a word of advice: You put more faith on a proper survey (which the Merdeaka Center presumably has done!) than on a street poll, OK? -- because I know in journalism world, such polls are very prone to bias, filtering out "unwelcome" comments, just running reports that fit into the Editor's inclination. Got my drift? (Just for the record, I served some 10 years in mainstream media, now freelanicng in non-stream, but I may be Xtream!
SPECIAL NOTE TO:
@1 and @2. I detect a contradiction is the first sentence, read along with the next. How can one report "...most feel confident the economy is doing well..." and in the same breath, write "...one in two are worried they will not be able to cope with inflation..."? Desi's perplexed, dumbfounded, or is my Ingerris not up to mark? I think I have to review my decision yesterday to continue with Desiderata.English on Sundaes! Write me to add your two sen worth. RM1 coins are NOT WELCOMED OR ALLOWED! However, you can shout AUSD worth!:) See, SweetSpirit, to answer your Q. why I'm late today -- Desi's in teAsing mood, or mode, or whatever ...:)

Desi
regarding your post today...a very good one.
I simply DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT why most Asians are absolutely obsessed by luxurious items. They have to splurge on the best shoes, the best clothes and the worst thing is, they even compare themselves with who is actually wearing the good clothes as opposed to the bad ones!!!!
I simply DO NOT understand!!!!!
And this phenomena does not occur only in Msia. This happens here in NZ, even where the other Asians are involved, par example the Koreans, the Taiwanese, Chinese etc
All equally materialistic.
No, they cannot buy something that is from Kmart or Target. No, they cannot buy something from the streets.
They HAVE to go boutique. They HAVE to eat good food. They HAVE to spend NZD 2000 just on shoppin in Melb.
Makes me question, what is the meaning of life?? Are our lives defined by materialistic posessions?
Hi Desi,
It is sad to see everyone is addicted to luxurious items. Honestly. It's never ending. And whatelse.. They brag and brag about it and then they will start comparing. It's just so annoying. And nowadays they even compare their own kids. Believe it or not. I've seen moms telling each other.. My son is very clever.. And he goes to art, music classes... BAH!
And then there was one parent in my Mom's center.. She told my mom that her son got an A for his BM (note: he's only 7) and this bimbo mom gave his son RM100 for the A.. What the hell..
People... Sigh.
Tuesday used to be Coney Dog Day. Nothing stays the same, I suppose.
Sab & kyels
The reasons why Asians in OZ/NZ are spending a lot on the unneccessaries such as branded stuff and the luxuries is because the mentality of 'i deserve' and 'the years and experience of hardship' by themselves or the paradigm or hardships passed on by their parents. Sad but true.
Secondly is that the parents has suffered a lot in their childhood days in need, therefore they do the reversed to their kids by providing them with anything and everything that they could afford. However, the effects of this pampering is always detrimental to the kid psychologically and he doesn't know how to socialise! Sigh.
I have found ways and means to have cheap and good enjoyment. For instance, I went to the National Zoo with my gf. We paid RM20 for the entrance fee which is reasonable and had a 3 hours walk admiring our distant cousins. We brought our own water and we went for a RM15 lunch outside. In total including parking, transportation lunch and entrance fee, we spend about RM45.
Then I took my gf to the musuem for an entrance fee of RM1 only. And then there is the picnic, hike, fishing, kayaking and other outdoor entertainment we could do for less than the money spend on tickets to the cinema, the popcorn and the temptation of buying while you pass by window display.
You could get a clear copy of a pirated DVD for RM8 - RM10 and sit in the comforts of your home for entertainment. If you a alcohlic, you could drop by the nearest hypermarket and get a 6 pack for RM24 instead of paying RM25 for a mug of beer at the pubs. Music? No problems. Switch on channel 71 or 72 on the Astro and blast it out loud or play some CDs.
It is true that life is getting more expensive, but then there are always other ways to enjoy yourself. Take for example the rural folks, ask yourself what do they do for entertainment. Go read The Kampung Boy by Lat. You'll get a good idea on how simple entertainment can be like!
I read the book about a year and a half ago. It's good. Read 5 People You Meet in Heaven and Morrie Schwartz (lupa how to spell his last name) In His Own Words also. Brilliant books I must say.
Wah...Dangerous Variable..I like the way you and your GF enjoy yourselves. The other day I suggested going canoeing with the BF at Titiwangsa but hujan pulak. I helped the BF saved about RM100 this month by watching DVDs at home and by cooking instead of eating out too often.
And for girls who loves to shop...aiseh...seriously, they should learn the art of buying reasonable priced stuffs that look expensive instead of splurging on horribly overpriced branded goods which I find is so freaking not worth it!!

Selling bIg thingys eh?
In one months in MyCountry, the 'HOLE of MALAYSIA is on sale.
Can you arange with Pak Lah to sell it to OZ -- here the Comm is 30% -- I'll give thee a STRong rekomendasi letter, and we'll split 50-50 (ie of the 30%); so-so?
Anywayz, my Blog sale is withdrawn; since I announced it, my Email has been tsunamied with appeals (some with H2O too! tastes like sea water ...) to Desi NOT TO SELL at eBay.

Wait till after I get the latest Update from Haridas, and the piece will be goodER! Hey, I.Cows. today it's NOT sundae, we take lots of liberties on fun=ning the Anglo language. It breaks the ice at Desi's, in case some1 wants teh-o Eyz limau, and not TTeriak!

On the subject of Teenagers?Youths, I think kyels represents Desi's Voice quite closely -- seremabn to Taiping if I drive like Mad is just 2 hours' drive? If I borrow one of 2 helicopters from one AP King, it will be like 29minutes? 20 minutes for the air trip, nine miniutes to get Desi to board the flying object. I'm no cat, just a Coww, and the cowws have just 9-8 life:) Very precious and precocious1 -- read DH Lawrence's LCL in Fomr 1, but that's branded good for that season. Maaf, banned,& good.

Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea:
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page let every stage
Advance Australia fair,
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.
There you go,,, like my singing haha.. btw our i land has to be more beautiful then where i already live as water surounds me :).
cheerz tcz
sweets:
I like teArt my OZ fRiends cos I bet the "informal" anthem of WM is on their lips more naturally than Advance Australia Fair. Knowing the fair-dinkum mates of my 12 years workin with them, AAF is too "formal" in such laid-back countrie, while WM is warm, dancey and friendly.
Wellz, to each hisher own, an "adopted" child like me has no choicz but follow theezzz!
Waltzing Matilda
Waltzing Matilda
She'll come a waltzing matilda with me
And she sang as she waltzed till the little billie bong
she'll come a waltzing maltilda with me...

Yan -- How about tomorrow, try: Wednesday's Child with me? I'll sing it Matt monro style to thee...:)
