Cops to record statements from participants of protest march
KUALA LUMPUR: Police will
be calling up organisers and participants of a demonstration held to
protest the arrest of PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli to facilitate
investigations under the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA).
City police chief Comm Datuk Amar Singh (pic) said that those taking part in the march from the Parliament building to the Bukit Aman police headquarters on Thursday morning had defied the conditions of the PAA.
"We will record their statements. Under PAA, they aren’t allowed to organise the demonstration, and yet they went ahead with it.
"They are legislators, and they enact the laws. They should know better that prior to organising any demonstrations, they should give police a 10-day notice.
"We have opened up investigations and will call the organisers and
participants," he told reporters at the city police headquarters on
Thursday.
Comm Amar confirmed that Bukit Aman had received a memorandum from the group, but said that he was not aware of the content of the document.
On Thursday, Opposition lawmakers rallied together from the Parliament building to the Bukit Aman police headquarters here to protest Rafizi's arrest.
The Pandan MP was arrested in front of Parliament at about 6.20pm on Tuesday under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) to facilitate investigations over claims he made against the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT).
The march, which kicked off at around 9.10am Thursday, was participated by scores of Opposition Members of Parliament, lawmakers and supporters.
Among those joining the march were veteran DAP leader Lim Kit Siang, PKR President Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, Sungai Petani MP Datuk Johari Abdul and Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng represented the coalition in handing over a memorandum to protest the arrest of Rafizi and ask that he be released immediately.
The memorandum was to be passed to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
The demonstration came to an end at about 9.35am after a police officer informed the group that they had committed offences under Section 9 of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012 for failing to notify the district police chief prior to the rally, and Section 4(2)(c) of the same act for participating in a street protest.

The party said its secretary-general will be charged in the Sessions Court tomorrow for an offence under Section 8 of the Act, which covers the wrongful distribution of classified information.
If convicted, the Pandan MP may be imprisoned up to seven years.
Rafizi was arrested outside the Parliament guardhouse on Tuesday and is currently under remand until tomorrow at the Jinjang police detention centre.
Pakatan Harapan lawmakers today staged a march from Parliament to the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman to demand Rafizi’s release, and will now be questioned for allegedly violating the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
DESIDERATA: YES, opposition law-makers and civil society activists are targeted with arrests under the Sedition Act, Official Secrets Act and now under the Peaceful Assembly Act. The aim is obvious to well informed Malaysians -- and discerning Journalist-Bloggers lah, Desi among 'em! -- to DISQUALIFY THESE VOCAL DISSENTERS DULY ELECTED BY THE ELECTORATE! -- so that they won't be able to contest in the next General Elections GE14 due the latest in the second half of year 2018.
With a subservient and compliant ELECTIONS COMMISSION< the Barisan Nasional led by UM_oh-No! is determined to hold on to Putrajaya AT ALL COSTS>
SO YOU OPPOSITION&CIVILSOCIETY PEEPS, WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?
Arrogance of POwer always precedes the country undergoing the process of becoming A POLICE STATE -- surely MalSia is heading towards THE ABYSS!
Desi closes comments wit' a famous quote to remind fellow Malaysians to sign the "SAVE MALYSIA" ONline Signature Campaign, because:~~~
"All that is necessary
for the triumph of evil
is for good men
to do nothing."
