Date: Thursday, 6 May 2010

Time: 10.00 am - 12.00 noon

Venue: Lecture Hall 3
(Faculty of Economics & Administration, UM)

This event will feature a lecture by Dr. Lim Mah Hui on the recently published book titled:

Nowhere to Hide: The Great Financial Crisis and Challenges for Asia

(ISEAS, Singapore, 2010) by Michael Lim Mah-Hui and Lim Chin

and a discussion on the book and the implications for Asia and Malaysia, particularly the much heralded New Economic Model

The Book: “Nowhere to Hide” takes a multi-disciplinary approach to explaining the great financial crisis of 2007-09. It combines the disciplines of economics, finance, sociology and politics to analyze the causes, consequences and challenges of the crisis. It is proposed that the causes of the crisis should be understood at three inter-related levels: the level of theory and ideology, the level of financial industry practices and malpractices, and finally the level of structural imbalances in the international economy. The book then traces the expansion of finance capital and financial instruments and their impact over the real economy. The book also offers important insights on the challenges these developments pose for Asia.

Chair: Dr Rajah Rasiah is Professor of Technology and Innovation Policy at University of Malaya.

Discussant 1: Dr Edmund Terence Gomez is Professor of Political Economy at University of Malaya.

Discussant 2: Dr Cheong Kee Cheok is a Senior Research fellow at the Faculty of Economics and Administration.

Main Presenter: Dr Lim Mah Hui taught at the University of Malaya, Duke University and Temple University before becoming an international banker for over 20 years in major banks like Chemical Bank (now JP Morgan Chase), Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and the Asian Development Bank in the United States and throughout Asia. He has a multi-disciplinary background in Economics, Sociology, Finance and Political Science.
