Obviously someone did not read jpsc's advice stemming from a generous goldmsith in yesterday's column about STRESS.My previous piece of mis-Stress won't do him any good.
From The Star, page 39:
Stem cell pioneer sick with stress
SEOUL: South Korean cloning pioneer Hwang Woo-suk, recently embroiled in anethics scandal, was hospitalised yesterday with extreme stress and would not be returning to work any time soon, hospital officials said.
Hwang was admitted to Seoul National University Hospital, spokesman Pi Ji-young said.
Stem cell scientist admits employees donated own eggs
In an earlier rport, dated November 24,2005, AP reported that:
Hwang had publicly apologized for ethics lapses, admitting two female scientists in his lab donated their own eggs for research, in a setback for the work that has raised worldwide hopes it could help find cures for untreatable diseases.
"I am very sorry that I have to tell the public words that are too shameful and horrible," Hwang said, appearing downcast and solemn before a news conference. "I should be here reporting the successful results of our research, but I'm sorry instead to have to apologize."
Hwang also said he would resign as head of the World Stem Cell Hub "to atone to the public." The hub, launched last month in Seoul along with international researchers, aims to be a center seeking treatments for now-incurable diseases and had announced plans to open cloning centers in San Francisco and London.
A trained veterinarian, Hwang is a national hero in South Korea and has gained international renown for his breakthroughs, including cloning the world's first human embryos and extracting stem cells from them. Earlier this year, he unveiled the world's first cloned dog.
"Ethics and science are the two wheels that drive the civilization of mankind," Hwang said. "Scientific research should be conducted within the boundaries of ethics but in reality, there were some cases in which the ethics regulations backing (quickly developing) science had not been in place." -- from AP report
Also from another AP report:
Singer Don Ho Recovering From Stem Cell Procedure on his Heart
07 December 2005
HONOLULU (AP) - Legendary Hawaiian crooner Don Ho was recovering in an intensive care unit at a Thailand hospital Tuesday following an experimental stem cell procedure on his ailing heart, his spokeswoman and a close friend told The Associated Press.
Ho, 75, known for his signature tune "Tiny Bubbles," underwent a new medical procedure not approved in the United States that involved taking stem cells from his own blood to multiply them and later to inject them into his heart, in hopes of regeneration.
"He came through the procedure with flying colors," agent Ed Brown, a close Ho friend, said in a telephone interview from his home in Malibu, Calif. "His vitals are excellent. Everything seems to be where it's supposed to be and everyone is quite happy.
"However, it's premature -- because he is in ICU -- to give you any statement of certainty."
Ho, who has appeared with Hollywood's biggest stars and entertained tourists for more than four decades, has been suffering from heart problems for about a year and had a pacemaker installed a few months ago.
In August, Ho was admitted to a local hospital with shortness of breath. He was treated for an abnormal heart rhythm and released after three days. He soon returned to his Waikiki show on a reduced schedule, but the show at the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel has been dark since he left for Asia on Nov. 26.
"He felt well enough, but his pacer sometimes would go off in his chest and scare the hell out of him," Brown said. "That's a difficult thing to live with right in the middle of 'Tiny Bubbles.'"
Publicist and spokeswoman Donna Jung said Ho hopes to return to the stage soon. He is expected to return to Honolulu from Bangkok in about two weeks.
Ho is known as a workaholic, devoted to his fans, since he first performed in Waikiki in the early 1960s. He has refused to join many of his aging fans in retirement.
Stars such as Lucille Ball, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra have attended Ho's shows. He also hosted the "The Don Ho Show" on ABC from 1976-77.
"That's all he understands. Work is a form of retirement for him," Brown said. "That's the way he takes his vacation -- on the stage."
"If he's going to live, he's going to be on that stage."
There were no other medical options for Ho and he did it as a "last resort," Brown said.
He called the singer's heart condition, "extremely serious."
"It wouldn't hurt if the millions of his fans would start to pray for him," Brown said. "Don, as do I ... believe in the power of prayer."
DESIDERATA: Normally I ruminate on Life, therefore Death as well, during the weekends when our minds are clearer and hence visionary.
We do need vision when we try to play God, don't we? I'm not claiming I am among the "we", here the "we" is generic and whoever fits the hat, he is the "we" -- we'll live it at that.
Since time immeasuruble, Man had tried to postpone the arrival of Mr Death for as long as possible. We refer to Death in the masculine form because in the times immemorial, they had not heard of things like gener equality, going bra-less,. and top-less on Bondi beach or other bitches...Ooops, I digress and miss-pell...butt it's OK, my steno-se-DesialostspeltitwithanX!-cretary is away on maternity leave cbecause her significant Other refused to carry the burden ...ah, the luxury of having your own Blog!
Okay, in my youth -- I'm steal youthful -- I wanted to grow older faster so that I could drive that fast car.
Now I'm at that older stage, I want to grow younger, yes, so that I can steal drive that fast car.
The silevry of life, or isit irony?
Well, one greAt writer -- help me with my memory recall, GH Wells maybe -- portrayed that in The Portrait of Dorian Gray -- that wonderful young man who retained the Adonis features through childhood, youthhood, manhood and grandpapahood. No-lah, Desi's kiddding -- see, always want to remain young!
Dorian Gray remains ForeeverYoung -- was there a song to that title or close to?
Anyway, he continued to live in bliss, forever and ever.
But when you're always in bliss, the bliss-meter will one day go south. When the meter does not know what the opposite is -- AGONY -- how could it perform the task of measuring the opposite/s?
So physical men never learnt from Dorian though they grow old and grey. The spiritual men were slightly better -- they went into the woods like mGf David Henry Thoreau -- or isit Henry David T, ne'er mind, this is not a test!
Others went underneath the Tree, like Gautama Buddha.
Simpletoins like me went into journals.
The library. The Bookers.
ALL FOR ONLY ONE GOAL.
To seek knowledge. To seek contentment. Maybe some foolish ones, like Desi, to see Da Truth.
So followed in Cililization's path many human endeavours to prolong our physical lifespan on da good earth.
For wealth and power, men stretch the day...mGf max errrman says.
For others less philosophical, like the TYoug Man becoming a billionaire-at-27,
It's Wine, Women and Song...
of course he could not recall such a deep phrase, so he translated it as:
Eat, Drink and Be Marry!
When you are on low drinks like Desi, intoxicating tehtarik makes him a bad spellar, so he trades an a for an e, sumtimes.
Okay Maaf, ia, I strayed from the Straight&Narrow. Where was I?
Ah, Dorian Gray.
Dorian Gray was just one man. An Adonis.
The more frightful ones were the BRAZIL BOYS.
No, not those 11 mad cows chasing after that ball.
These Boyz wanted more of the same. They wanted to replicate the selected species.
Akin to the thing those Naziz were trying to do. Selective species.
Superior race.
Many unknowing ones once accused our neighbour down N-S? of trying somethin' nigh it, but I stand uncorrrected.
Well, can you imagine how the next WORLD CUP SERIES
would be like when the Brazilian team consists of 10 Peles and One Desi manning -- okay-lah, my soccer is not so-gooda, boy-ying -- the goal-post?
Maybe the Kementerian Sukan would pay trillions to buy over 10Peles plus One from its oil buttget? Okya-lah, I'd settle for billions-lah!
Then some years back I was told by myGOODfriend -- chinese scholar Mr Coww -- to look for some sping water. Yes, this is the good part.
This morn I was not downing my usual tehtarik.
I went trekking in the woods -- as Thoreau did a century back -- not around Giolden Pond -- Iit was somewhere in da boodocks called FU RONG.
I had my good friend from way back David Yan acting as flier Tuck. We rummaged through the trees and shrubs, fighting scorpions and insects that looked like leeches and earthwoorms suckling our -- nomilka -- sucking our blood.
Then we charmed on Da Spring.
Sweet, cool waters on a hot, humid, Malaya tropical afternoon.
Soothing, balming, honey, nectary, maketh both of us feel like cvhildren again.
We could sing The First Of May unendingly and steal sounded badder thab the BGees!
Long story short, both of us had our fill and feel of Da Sprong Water.
It restores the black back to our million(H)aire.
It puts the spring back to our feet -- feel like four feet.
It makethe autumn feel like spring.
So HOPE springs eternal in Desis heart.
Stemming not from those stem cells. But fro Da H2) from Da FuRong Spring.
Don't ask emwhere the spring is.
Go to the nearest VCD shoppe and ask for RM15.90 version:

Hi Desi:
I see a really nice long post today - a mood characterized by the sublime ??
This is an extremely diffiCULT and sensitive issue - Man himself defines the boundaries of ethics to curb his own designs (some believe are God-given, therefore, should not be tweaked like computers) and yet, he violATES his own rules !!
Who should he blame ? I suppose he himself - if he wants to broaden his territorial boundaries, he should know the proper procedures or protocols, lest he incurs the wrath of God, for trying to play HIS role. So, my lousy guess is that his stress is the result of guilt in his conSCIENCE and the feeling of shame like what Adam and Eve felt in the Garden of Eden.
Don Ho..hmm...I pray he gets well soon. I love his "Tiny Bubbles, Beautiful Kauai, Hawaiian Little Grass, Lovely Hula Hands, etc". He is sure good looking in his youth, perhaps like the young Dorian Gray. His daughter, Hoku Ho, orso very pretty and orso sings ! Genetic ? By God's designs ?
BTW, 6 Dec 2005 was the 1st death anniversary of an ex-Singaporean lady who lived in Rotterdam, authored a book called "A Pain In The Neck" and blogged for about 10 days (as far as I can see) before her unfortunate passing on 6 Dec 2004 at age 32. You can read and share her emotions at
http://dyingis.blogspot.com/
Death is such a heavy subject and I luv reading into it - it never fails to draw a tear or two, but gives emotional strength in return. That's what I would call fair.
Cheer up mgf
I havent read the novel, but The Picture of Dorian Grey is by Oscar Wilde. From the little that I know, while Dorian Grey remains youg and beautiful, his reflection (and person) in the painting fades, grows old and ugly.
